DISASTROUS EARTHQUAKE
IN JAPAN.
FAMOUS SUMMER RESORT WIPED OUT.

Japan has again been visited by a disastrous earthquake, and although the full extent of its devastation cannot yet be estimated, it is evident from the meagre reports which have been received that there has been a serious loss of life and enormous damage to
property,
The centre of the disturbance was Mishima, in the Idru Pro- vince, about 40 miles west of Tokyo. -,
Detailed accounts of the damage and casualties in some in- stances are conflicting, but both official and unofficial reports In. dicate that the total death-roll is around about 200.
According to an official report reaching the Home Office only three houses at Hakons-Machi' escaped destruction,
The local military forces are assisting in the rescue work, and everything possible is being done for the care and comfort of the injured and homeless, though owing to the cold and frosty weather, It is foared that a certain amount of suffering is inevitable.
According to the details received, by the Home Office, the death- roll has now been raised to 223; injured, 146; and missing, 6.
The number of bufidings ́destroyed is 655, and these partially destroyed is 4,500.

It is believed that no damage was caused locally.
The earthquake is possibly con- neeted with the series of sharp quakes which have recently boen sccurring on the Idzu Peninsula, 40 miles west of Tokyo.
