ADAPTING STYLES

SECRET OF CHOOSING A
DRESS.
How many times in the last year. have wo looked at a group of women and said to ourselves, "The now styles are so trying!" Then again wo have seen a woman who looked very smart in the new fashion and we have changed our idea about it. If we stop to analyse the situa tion, we shall usually find that our objection is the result of either poor adaptation of the fashion to the in- dividual who is wearing it or of imperfect fit, for the present style demands a well-fitted garment. If

not be orrwhelined by her clothes. then she may dare to accentuate her height by wearing dresses with a vertical feeling The slim figure should, wits the present style, have her clothes fitted quite closely or she will look baggy, and that is cer tainly a most unppropriate attri bute for her.
If Not Sum.
The matronly figure, in spite of the objection to the modern fashion which one continually bears, can be as well gowned in this style as in any other type. It is only neces- | sary to give the individual figure thought and plan the gown to en hance the best features, The French Fave long since discovered that it is much better to bring out one's good points than to try to cover the less attractive onca. Take, for instance, the figure which. is larger above the waistline and bas small hips. A dress planned for her would accentuate the hips by having a close-fitting yoke or skirt which would show the hips to ad yantage. The waist of this gown might have surplice line and should be plain as additional trim- ming draw attention to that part of the dress. The proportion of the length of the skirt and the blouse must be determined so that the skirt is the least bit more prominent, but care must be taken not tớ đo this too obviously.
Camouflaging the Waistline.
With the reverse figure, that one where the hips are larger, the natural waistline must be used with discrimination. One should be very careful to avoid a short-waisted

SCREWDRIVERS.
Most women nowadays would be ashamed to say they could not handle a screwdriver, which has sundry uses in every household. At the eame time, a woman'a wrist is often scarcely strong enough to give the last effective turns to get the screw immovable or to withdraw one which has been rusted into its socket.
