KING EDWARD

QUEEN VICTORIA,

AND THE KAISER.

REVELATIONS OF BICKERING IN THE QUEEN'S LETTERS.

HOW AN ADMIRAL'S UNIFORM TURNED THE EMPEROR'S

Further light of a most interesting kind is thrown on the character of Queen Victoria by Mr. G. E. Buckles first of three of a third serica of "The Letters of Queen Viutoria." It is published (John Murray, 28.) by the authority of tho King.

The book carries the story of Queen Victorin Irom 1898 to 1500, when Lord Salisbury

xwapped" Heligaland for an immense area in East Africa, against the Queen's own predilections.

Thay any of my possessions should be thus bartered away," sho writes, "causes me great un- easiness." She insists that it sha!! not be a precedent. Very human

details are that Queen Victoria was enraged at the mannerly behaviour of the Kaiser

King Edward, then Prince of Wales.

Queen Victoria regretted that Mrs. Maybrick was not banged.

The Queen applied to the Kaiser's conduct the words-Sickening. In decent, Madness, Unhealthy, Un feeling. Unnatural, Insolence, Hot headed, Conceited, Wrong-headed.

he would not go to Vienna if King Edward, then Prince of Wales, was to remain there at the same time,

Queen Victoria became very angr. she was the Kaiser's grandmother, and she was not going to put up with his tantrumna. She did not like the way the Kaiser and Bismarck, still Chancellor, were going on

Then she writes to King Edward, "How sickening it is to see Willy, not two months after his beloved and noble father's death,

going to banquets and reviews! It is very indecent and unfeel- ing!"

A long memorandum from Lord Salisbury begins by telling the Queen that Count Hatzfeldt. then German Ambassador in London. had mentioned to me the differences which had arisen between the Em- peror of Germany and the Prince

of Wales."

She says that the Crown Prince Rudolph of Austria told the Prince of Wales that "William " had in- tended to turn his back, on the

"All this shows a

very un healthy and unnatural state al míad, and he mist be mundle to feel that his grandmother and uncle will not stand such insol. ence. The Prince of Wales must not submit to such treatment. Queen's Fear of Political Reaction.

"As regards the political rela-1 tions of the two Governments, the Queen agrees that that should not be affected (if possible) by these miserable personal quarrels; but the Queen itch fear that, with such a hot-headed, conceited and wrong-headed young man, devoid of all feeling, this may at any moment become impossilde."
