GIANT AIR LINER LEAVES MADRID.
AN UNFORTUNATE INCIDENT.
Madrid, Nov. -The giant Ger man Junkers airliner "G.38" which
co her visit to the European Lapitals arrived hero a few days ugo and performing flights over Madrid witnessed by huge crowds, continued her flight to Lisbon this afternoon after an incident which at first aroused some misapprehen- sions.
When the plane was about to 1.ave, the authorities suddenly step ned in and refused permission for the departure, An enquiry reveal- cd that the pilots of the plane were accused of interference in Spanish internal political affairs because they had shown some attentions to the famous Spanish flyer Franco, who recently got into trouble owing to his outspoken opposition to the present Spanish governmcut,
On learning of the incident the German Ambassador immediately intervened and made suitable re presentations, pointing out that thie flight of the 'G.33." was merely a trial for a passenger air service without any political significance, that the pilots too were 20 way interested in Spanish internal poli- tics and regarded Franco only as
famous colleaguo.
The Ambassador's declaration led to un immediate amicable settle- nent of the incident whereupon the plane departed without any tur ther difficulties.
ANTI-SOVIET BAN CRITICIZED.
FOREIGN MACHINERY FIRMS' STRONG VIEWS.
This Bench having duly, con sidered all the documents in two Ales submitted to them and which, among other documents, contain a record of the proceedinga upon which the conviction took place, and having heard Mr. Noel Instone Brewer, are unanimously of the opinion that they cannot find any Justification for the conviction and do not see their way to take any disciplinary action.'
BETTER THAN A COURT
ACQUITTAL."
MRS. INSTONE BREWER
INTERVIEWED.
Mrs. Instone Brewer, who is now in Hong Kong, when interviewed by our representative, said that the news did not come as a surprise to her. "I had, as a matter of fact, been exporting something of the sort. But," she added, "I did not think we were important enough for a Reuter wire from London!
"I am not a criminal and it is to you, and you alone, that I can look for deliverance from this charge."
Judge's Bemarki,
Mr. Justice Wood said in part:- You will realise that I have listened with very great patience to what you have said and I will assure you that the facts you have. set out so far as they have appear ed in the evidence before the jury," I have fully considered..
The verdict of "Quilty" brought in by the jury was their unanimous. verdict. It was given after a close and careful consideration of the evi- deace before them. The trial insted for four days and they listened care. fully to the evidence and everything that was said.
I think it is right that I should say here that, having followed the evidenco with them, I myself agree fully with the verdict and that the verdict is the only possible one justified by the evidence,
You have been indicted and you, yourself, realise the gravity of the victed and it is my duty to pass charge on which you have been con. sentence which, it is hoped; will deter you from doing anything of the kind again. It was your am bition to appear as n Director of
Corporation which had gigantic financial stability and you knew, and no-one knew better, that the Inatone Banking Corporation was nothing of the kind.
It is a painful duty to pass sen- tence upon a member of the Bar of this Court. The sentence which
"A legal friend has just point ed out to me that this decision of the Benchers means more than an I pass upon you is that you be im acquittal by the Judicial Com-prisoned for four months without mittee of the Privy Council. Such hard labour.
an aequittal might have been given on legal points, but the Benchers have decided that my husband has done nothing incon- sistent with the very high stand ards of professional conduct in sisted upon by the British bar." In conclusion, Mrs. Brewer said she wished to thank her many friends in Hong Kong for all the kindness received from them during a very trying time..
A LOCAL LEGAL OPINION. Another well-known Hong Kong lawyer said:
Mr. Brower has absolutely no alain on bia character, in view of the very, emphatic finding of the Inn Bench."
He has been discharged of the crime, to all intents and purposes. and should be able to resume his calling in Hong Kong to-morrow without the alightest prejudice."
"It is assumed that the Govern- ment will make the usual honour- Able amend.'"
It will be remembered that at the longthy Police Court hearing, Mr. Brewer was defended by Mr. E.. Davidson. At the Sessions he cou ducted his own defence.
THE CASE RECALLED.
MR. BREWER'S ELOQUENT DEFENCE.
Mr. Brewer was, indicted at the Hong Kong. Criminal Sessions in January lant for perjury in "connec tion with the filing of a statutory report relating to the Instone Bank- ing. Corporation..
