UNFAIR COMPETITION IN

HONG KONG.

SINCE all sorts of schemes for the protection of industry are being now discussed so eagerly all. over the world, it is quite in the nature of things that the subject should be raised in this Colony. At the last meeting of the Legislative Council

about which our industrialists ap near so greatly concerned is really a very small ohs, and certainly not important enough to warrant any interference with a system to which this Colony is entirely indebted for the prosperous stage of develop ment it has reached. There can be no obligation-admitted or

implied on the part of the Government to take under its wing any manufac turing industry which company, promotors enre to contemplate. Goods from all countries must be admitted to this Colany free from all interference and restraint if we are to retain our primary indus try. This may result-the facts have not been disclosed-in kern competition with certain manufacturing enterprises. competition is described na unfair but much more unjust and unwise would it be to erect a tariff will around the Colony which, while keeping out a few keen competitors in subsidiary branches of activity, would also bar the approach of our best and really vital customers.
