WHY FEWER OMNIBUS PASSENGERS?

For the first time in its history, the London General Omnibus Co. has been reluctantly obliged to dis- I miss 250 of its men, mostly drivers and conductors, owing to the de- creased number of passengers not warranting the reinstatement of the 1194 omnibuses which were taken out

of serving at the seasonal August decline.

By September the public should bave returned from their holidays, and the reduced omnibus servies should be restored to its normal condition; but, for some undiscover ed reason, the marked falling-off in the number of passengers, which always occurs in the holiday month, has not been made up.. Various conjectures have been put forward to account for this unusu al condition; but the Omnibus Company itself has no explanation to offer. It has been suggested that the decreased passenger traffic may be due to the general depres son in trade, and the consequent; tightness of money. But in dis proof of this it may be pointed. out that the picture palaces and' other places of amusement show no inclination on the part of the pub. lio to curtail their oxpenses.
