ENO

When Food Makes No Appeal

A failing appetite is one of Nature's danger signals. It is a warning that all is not well with your digestion-that your system is not freeing itself punctually and thorough- ly of its daily waste. It is this condition which Eno's "Fruit Salt" corrects.

Eno simply flushes and effectively cleanses the whole intestinal tract and so prevents the inner sluggishness which leads to poor appetite and indigestion. That is why Eno first thing every morning will stimulate your keenness for meal times and enable you to enjoy every morsel of your food.

WHAT MONEY CAN BUY.

How much can a lucky girl spend

on a few simple clothes and toilet 1 ctcotoras, if Papa, having had n good day on the Stock Exchange, tolls her to go out and have n really sumptuous afternoon's shop- ping? The idea occurred, the other day, to a young woman over in New York, who set forth on a voyage of diecovery.

For stockings sho found that you can pay up to £100 (pounds, mark you) a pair; for this sun you ob- tain chiffon stockings with real lace insertions. Three-piece sets of plain crêpe de chine lingerie, without lace or embroidery, were offered her for & mere £20, but other sgia, trimmed with the nest Ince, cost as much 03 £100--in black chiffon trimmed with coffee-tinted lace, for instance. Very high prices, too, could be paid at a shop which specialised in fragile chiffon sets in colours to harmonise with tho frocka. A nightgown, to match the daytime lingerie sets, coat £50. A satin and Ince corselet cost £17, and a girdle of satin and lace for evening wear was ten shillings less. The most costly corsets offered her were com- paratively cheap-only about £20 unless she chose to demand trim- mings of real lase.

Suitable hats for, a variety of oc casiona cost £12 each, but an exclu- sive Paris model, consisting of m rhinestone buckle and a very few shillings worth of soft black felt, was offered her for £35! Nico simple frocks (imported models, Moddom") were priced at £80; and for quite a good-looking ensemble, though naturally without fur trim- mings at such modest price, was offered for $190.. One hundred pounds was the average price of the best evening gowns; a wrap, with a little fur on it, cost the same. Fur coats depended, of course, on the sort of fur. Chinchilla topped the lot. A really awell chinchilla cont cost £8,000.

Too Good to L080.

Most of us feel proud of such (if any) of our handkerchiefs as have: set us back half a crown apiece. This young woman, roving round New York's luxury shops, found herself offered plenty priced at £10 apiece, and some at prices ranging up to £20. To drop on such bandker. chiefs she was, offered white violet at £10 an ounes. The usual price for shopping handbags, was about £11, though unusual specimens were priced at as much as $10. Quite a nice seed pearl bag, for carrying in the evening, came to £100. Even- ing slippers, made to order, were priced at between £20 and £30 A pair. Great stress was laid, as in the case of nearly all the other things, on the objects having come from abroad or being of partly foreign manufacture. For $10 extra one could have gold or silver- plated heels (pay your money and take your choice). Some shoes cost £40 A pair.

The costliest outdoor walking shoes, however, cast only one £15 to £90. That is a comforting fact to bear in mind if you ever fad yourself out shopping in New York City.

THE NEW MODE.

SEA WATER STAINS.

Bes water stains should be doalt with as soon as possible, before thoy got beyond remedy, Light summer garments which will soon be washed can be left quite safely, but navy and black articles should be treated at once. First sponge out the stain with cold soft water by stretching the garment tightly over a basin and letting the water run over it again and again. This will wash out the salt, and a pressing after- wards with a warm iron will banish any trace of the stain. Should the stain be stubborn, then a sponging with vinegar will prove effective. More delicate fabrics should be stretched tightly and the strains beaten amarily with a little cane. This will knock out the salt, and After steaming and prossing no mark should be visible.

BE LOFTIER.

FASHION'S DECREE FOR THE AUTUMN.

HAIR "OUT."

Dictators of the mode-whoever they may be have decreed that women shall continue to wear fore heads this autumn. More, their brows are to be further encouraged in that loftinors, that protuber- anco, that Je ne sais quoi of naked distinction that during the summer has marked out the ultra-fashion- able forehead from the low-brows

Hair is completely "out." The correct expression is one of slightly bored astonishment induced by atraining the hair back under and

brows and give the wearer an at- tractive appearance of being sus pended by the scalp.

This delightful fashion is not now. In the fifteenth century it was de- finitely bad form for any lady of quality to show her hair. The offending growth was scraped back under a close-fitting coif that die played the forehead and had littlo holes for the cars. This detail may be adopted by the most exclusive milliners.

In the Caroline period in Eng land, too, a very high forchend was in favour, and slightly bulging eyes were snaft. ̈ Among popular beauty recipes there are many to prevent hair growing too low on the fashionable brow."

They have the impertinence to Bay they will not obey the stern forchend Jawa recently issued ofExially from Paris.

What is the use, nák the rebels, of deep, mysterious glances, if they must be shot, so' to speak, from under a magnified billiard ball1. Where are the secrets (continuo those disgraceful creatures) of a woman's face, pitilessly exposed in every line and angle? For what were drooping brim seductive curls, shadows, and reticencies in- vented?

In the shade of a cunning brim ond's eyes can look like stars, Straining from under the present hairless expanse they only look like goseberries.. Down with the Why fashion oracle, thuy cry! shouldn't wo, for a change, wear what becomes us?.

To be brief, the hats are in the ring, and the hair has begun to
