New York, October 12-Most observers of the New York stock markel werd of the, opinion to-day that stocks will continue, during the coming week, the decliues which wore registered during the work just past. While there have been efforts to stir ap a spirit of greater optimism, observers feel that, nei- ther the atitude of investers nor the gondition of the country as a whole warmots great hope that the Rúrket will take a decided diree tion toward the better during the arst week.

A very quiet tune has provasted in our local market during the past week, and with the exception of continue in demand, there has been the more popular counters which an absence of buying orders. Trans actions have therefore been of a restricted senle, with only slight variation is prices.

Was at Avorge 119.70, while on Saturday it was 118.54; and the Dow Jones average for 20 utilities, which on Wodnes day stood at 73.03, was on Satur day at 09.48. This trend will, it was believed, continue for the next few days at least.

Most forecasters still adhere to the belief that fundamental. condi- tions are not unsound, but that a hard winter is in prospect, which is so universally reafimed than stock prices must be further reduced be. fore they will be at consistent levels.
