EFFECT OF COSTUMES IN THE STUDIO.

An interesting broadcasting ex- periment is to be tried in London

at the B.B.C. Studio at Savoy

Hill. Artists in some musical pro

ductions will be made up for the ocession and will appear in stage cortumo as if they were in front of an audience.

"Like an Empty House." Constant appearances before a

big audience do not necessarily qualify anyone to appear before the microphone. There are favourites of the stage who fail completely to register in the broadcasting studio The plan is to reduce the effect the success that is theirs in the f microphone fright.

Getting the Atmosphere. "It was a musical show with

which I was concerned," he said, "and everything seemed sumpic enough when I took the rehearsals in the studio. But what a change when the night of the performance camo! The only difference туда that the microphone was on. instend of off. Yet it made me as conscious as 'I would be if I went to bed in the middle of Piccadilly Circus."

Mr. Philip Ridgeway is in agreement with this view.

"You Ics the distinctive atmos- phere of the theatro when you broadcast," he said to me "and there is no doubt that at first many actors and actresses find it didicult to be themselves. In the autumn I intend to make ex- ¡perimente.

SOME USEFUL HINTS.

The following is a good test for fixed condensers: Connect the condenser to be tested momentarily ncross an H.T. battery of about 30 volts, and leave it two minutes. Then connect a pair of telephones across it, when you should bear a click, which will grow louder as the capacity of the condenser increases.

Condensers above 0.3 mfd, should not be discharged with telephones, as they hold a large enough charge to cause damage to the receivers. OPERATIC SELECTIONS-

Do not allow your set to repro- duce voices at the same volume as band music, etc., for the volume of sounds are so disproportionsts in the two cases that speech is bound to sound unnatural even if the set is not distorting.

It is a good plan to include a fash-lamp bulb in series with the condenser and laud-speaker of an output filter circuit, so that in the event of a condenser breakdown the amall lamp will act as a fuse.

The object of the night concerts given by German sending stations is to obtain information as to the transmission range and the pure- ness of reception of the broadenst ing. At the samo time the Gorman Wireless desires to proinoto intor national unity by the aid of ar- tistic performances accessible: to, And the property of, all. Also Germans abroad are to be given an opportunity to hear from their home country. This result will no too be welriored by thaLeipzig -Brandsdating-Esation, and thatconstr
