By GLUYAS WILLIAMS
THE SILVER SCREEN.
"REDEMPTION," WITH JOHN GILBERT,
John Gilbert's latest all-talking film to be shown at the Queen's on Friday is one of the strangest fonts in character delineation ho has aver essayed. He has takes a paychopathic study, has portrayed a. madman, and niade of him one' of the most appealing and most forcibly dramatic clinracters the Aereen has seen in some time.
The new Metro-Goldwyn-Meyer' picture is a tale of Russia, based upa narative by Tolstoi. It was recently seen on the stage as an Arthur Hopkins production. Hop- kins adapted the atago play from Tolstoi's "The Living Corpse," and Dorothy Farnum, in turn, adapted this to the present screen vehicle.
"Redemption" deal with the pull of heredity upon the soul. Gilbert is seen as a young officer in tho Russin of the Tzar, torn be tween love for his wife and the strange call of gypsy blood inherit ed from his ancestors,
As the romantic. lover of the first part of the play, as the victim of the strange curse of his heredity, and fondly as the stunned derelict,
·Gilbert's threefold performance is a convincing piece of acting-one of, the finest the star of "The Big Parade" has ever given the screen, "Street Girl" at the Central Theatre.
