MODERN MOTOR SHIPYARD IN KOWLOON.

HON, DR. KOTEWALL PERFORMS OPENING CEREMONY AT TO-KWA-WAN.

GENERAL MANAGER ON CHINA'S PLACE IN THE -SHIPPING WORLD.

The South China Motor-Shipbuilding and Repairing Works, Limited a new shipyard on Kowloon Bay, was officially opened yesterday by the Hon. Dr. R. H. Kotewall, C.M.G., LLD...

The aims of the shipyard were fully described by Mr. G. Brandt, the General Manager of the Company, whose speech is reproduced below. Mr. Brandt pointed out that there was vast scope for motor-shipbuilding in China, pointing out that China was a vast country with a long cohatline, many rivers and innumerable seaports. She did a vast business with the outside world, but only passessed a very small fraction of the world's shipping.

Mr. Brandt further indicated that the new shipyard was to commence work almost immediately, and be expressed the hope that two new motor ships, to be built by this shipyard, will be launched in seven months time. The speaker said that these ships will be something new on the China Coast, promising the audience. that they would see the latest inventions in shipbuilding embodied in these ships..

HONG KONG DAILY PRESS, TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 16, 1930.

To Comments Immediately, This shipyard is, Ladies and Gen. tlemen, as I have already said, in its preliminary state, and you can see on a plan laid out in cut draw- ing room bow it has been decided to lay it out. We have to open it at its present page because · we have to start at once on same re pair work, and we have also to prepare for the laying out of the keela of two moter ships and one motor launch for which orders have already been placed with us, and which will keep us busy from the beginning. We have also opened this yard so soon that you may see the present state in its infancy and admire its growth in six months hence, when we hope to have again the honour of your presence here to witness the double launchings of the two first motor ships, which will, I uasure you, be something new on the China coast, and in these ships you will see the latest inventions in shipbuilding.

We are also prepared to under- take any sort of repair work for Diesel engine motors and other re- pairs, and our abla yard manager, Mr. Haslett, whom I expect many. of you will have known during his ten years of work in this Colony, will attend to the building and re- pairs, of steamers; we are, there-

fore, prepared and shall be pleased to receive inquiries and to submit tenders for new buildings as well as for repairs both for steam and motor vessels.

the cases of marina accidents. ́ 1 am frankly in favour of these laws and regulations, and, as long as I have the horlour to be the general manager of this ship-yard, I shall see that no ship built or repaired will leave this shipyard without having fully complied with the international laws in general and of this Colony in particular. Surely I do not mean to be harsh on our own patrons, but I am sure that all will concur with me that well- built and well-repaired ships will, in the long run, give better satia faction and better profits. With these words I hope that the Chinese ship-owners will see their mistake in their opinion against the local authorities who I myself always find very courteous in giving their kind and valued assistance and advice. I hope also that the Chinese ship- owners and others will all come to the right conclusion that ships of bigh standard building and repair will always, in the long run, prove to be much more satisfactory and" economical than those of cheap workmanship.

Shipbuilding and shipping are industries which contribute largely towards the prosperity of a coun- try. I will, therefore, lay out this shipyard thoroughly efficiently and I hope it will, like a barometer, show better days for shipbuilding and shipping in China in general and for the country in particular.
