The Doctor's Secret," Para- mount's latest all-talking picture, was received with great enthusiasm. last night at the Central Theatre, where the picture had its initial showing. The cast features Ruth Chatterton, E. B. Warner, and John Lodger in the leading rules,

The story has been adapted to the screen from Sir James M. Barrie's famous stage success en- titled "Half an Hour" by William- de Mille, who also directed the Elm.

Of outstanding merit is the faith-

ful reproduction afforded by the Parnimount Quality Sound method' employed to record the human voice. As in the case of "Charm- ing Sinners," the sensational film which played here" recently, the reproduction is technically, and

dramatically perfect. Gone are the flaws heretofore associated with other talking pictures. "The Doc- tor's Secret" could not be improved upon at this stage.

Another feature of the film is the

cast itself. Miss Chatterton, it will be recalled, was a former Broadway star, and her dramatic stage experience makes her an ideal actress for talking pictures. H. B. Warner also is a former stage star, and his voice records in a convin- eing manner, John Loder, the young British actor who makes his Ameri- can début in this picture, is also "effective, as is Robert Edeson.

The story is a tense drama of London society. In sharp dramatic contrasts, it shows the audience the heights of happiness and despair that can come to one woman's life, in half an hour. Throughout, the wildest emotions are concealed be- hind the polite phrases of social intercourse. It is to be highly re- commended as excellent audible screen entertainment.

If laughter is a tonic, as doctors assert, the audience at the Queen's Theatre should be in a healthy con- dition this week.
