Arsenal and Aston Villa were again successful in the premier division of the English Leagus football matches played on Satur day. Sheffield Wednesday, last year's champions, shared the points with Sheffield United. Tottenham Hotspur were unsuccessful in their third attempt in the Second Division. Everton are making good progress to regain their lost position..

Cleveland, September 1-Six halloons" ware ready to-day to start in the finals of the nineteenth an- nual distance race for the Gordon Bennett Trophy.

They included three foreign er- tries-the Belgica of Belgium, the Barmen of Germany and the Pierre Fishbaon of France.

The other balloons were the City of Detroit, to be piloted by Ed- ward Hill, the Goodyear VII, to be piloted by W. T. Van Orman, and the City of Cleveland, to be piloted by Roland Blair.

Last year's race started from St. Louis and the Goodyear VIII, piloted by Mr. Van Orman dä is the case this year, with Alan Mac- Cracker as his aide, won with a distance of 341 miles. The world' distance record is 1,800 miles, made in 1914.

The balloons are wafted to and fro by various wind current, and

a considerable measure of skill is i required in regulating the altitude of the balloons, under varying de groes of buoyancy at different times of day and night, so as to catch the most favorable breezes.

Preparations have been made to cover the pregress of the various balloons by talegraphic and tule- phonic signals from various parts The craft will of the country. probably scatter soon after rising, atid since none carries the weighty.
