GROWTH OF PORTUGUESE COMPANY.

FIRST ANNUAL DINNER AT THE CLUB DE:

RECREIO.

SUCCESSFUL DRIVE FOR RECRUITS.

The Officers and men of the Portuguese Company of the Hong Kong Volunteer Defence Corps were hosts last night at the Club de Recreio to a large number of friends when the Company held their first annual dinner.

As many as 220 sat down to a very excellent dinner, and an atmosphere of extreme conviviality prevailed throughout the even- ing.

"

The main hall of the Club de Recreio was tastefully decorated with streamers bearing the colours of the Volunteers. A number of witty speeches were made during the evening, some of which are produced below.

It was indicated that quite a number of new recruits have joined the Portuguese Company during the past few weeks and that the ranks, have grown from 17 members in 1925 to almost ten times that number to-day. "Petticoat influence," it was alleg. ed, had something to do with the recent swelling in the number of recruits for the Company.

GENERAL SANDILANDS' HAPPY SPEECH.

His Excellency Major-General I. W. Sandilands, C.B., C.M.G., D.S.O., was amongst those present and threw the gathering into rears

Other guests included Major H. B. L. Dowbiggin, Mr. A. C. L. de Albuquerque e Castro and Hon. Mr. J. P. Braga

After appealing for more young recruits to join the band and pre- pare themselves to carry on after the older hands, Capt. Mitchell

How a sampan towed by a motor bont made good progress in an attempt to escape from Revenne Officers, and how the motor boat failed, was told at Central Magir- Revenue tracy yesterday when Officer Powell charged seven mon, including a Chinese Revenue Officer, with the unlawful possession of a huge quantity of raw non-Goveru ment opium.

"Mr. Horace Lo appeared for the fourth defendant who was described as a motor boat.coxswain.

There was certainly plenty of recompense. The training provided was bene- ficial to the individual and one made genial friends and spent genial times together.

The band of the Portuguese Com- pany played an excellent selection of suitable music during dinner. At 10 o'clock dancing commenced and the fun and jollity was carried on till a late hour.

After the toast of "The King" was honoured, the toast of the President of the Portuguese Republic was proposed.
