ferred dealing with the matter, directing that communication should be made with the Viscountess.

Lady Adare paid the debt and| apologised. Judge Tobin discharg ed the order of committal.

When Lady Adare stepped into the defendants' box the Judge said: to her, "Do you wish to say any thing!"*

Lady Adare I was at the Law Courts at 12 o'clock and therefore, could not be here.

Judge Tobin: You were ordered. to attend on May 90 and you did not obey my order. You were served with an order to attend be fore me to be examined about your means and you don't obey that order. Can you tell me why I do not think I received it..

Are you wearing that you never received it? Now, be careful.-I remember, nothing about it.

don't know how to treat writs?

Lady Adäre I have had a very 'bad education, I am afraid.

Have you not anyone to help you, any representative here to-day 7-I have not.

Imprisonment Refused. Judge Tobin: I am asked to make an order for you to go to prison. I do not want to do that. Tell me everything you can say in your own favour.

Lady Adare: My explanation is that I do not think I received the writ.

Can you swear that you never re- ceived it 8-1 may have received

it.

Why did you not come to the Court 1-I was answering the same questions at the Royal Courts (of Justice) and thought it would save time.

The judge is not vindictive in this matter. You have been guilty of grievous contempt of Court, and should apologise or say something, Have you no one to advise you? I am afraid you are not able, or de not choose, to speak in your own lavour.

Lady Adare, did not reply.

The Debt Paid.

Judge Tobin: If you pay the debt, and apologise for the con- tempt of Court, I will consider most favourably an application for your. discharge.

Lady Adare: How much is it f Do you not know really the Dount of your debt, Lady Adare? It seems to me you do not realise the importance of the matter.-E will pay it

Lady Adare and Mr. Hedden (clerk to the solicitors representing Dreyfous) then left the Court. After half an hour they returned, and Mt. Hedden said that Lady Adare had paid the debt and costs.

Judge Tobin then saidag "I do not want anyone, whether of high or humble position, to be taken to prison, however much they may have been guilty of contempt of court, without giving them" an. opportunity to explain their con "duct I suspended my order until to-day so that Lady Adaro might make application.

"She treats the matter in a very flippant way indeed. It is only after a good deal of persuasion "and kindly consideration on my part that I can induce her even" to think of apologising,

The apology has now been. made. It is a very half-hearted apology, and I gravely doubt whe ther it is in the least bit earnest. I do not trust what the lady says one little bit.

There is this one thing to be said, perhaps, in her favour, that she does not seem to have any friend to advise her. I should have thought that a lady in her position. wald have had some friend to come with her to couple Thin he

Lady Adare then left the Court.
