SCENE IN COURT.
WORDS BETWEEN MAGIS- TRATE AND CLERK.
There was a scene at the Oldham Police Court last month between Councilor A. J. Howcraft, a magis- trate and chairman of the Conser- vative party in Oldham, and Mr. Herbert Booth, magistrates' clerk The case
was one in which Alice Crabtree, of 5, Rudd Lane, My- thelmroyd, near Hebden Bridge, was summoned for failing to pay a railway" fares giving a wrong ad- dress, and attempting to avoid pay. ment. The case for the prosecution was that on May 29 the woman ar- rived at Royton Junction Station and represented that she had travelled from Rochdale... A rail- way detective afterwards saw tier, and it was alleged that the woman Inade to him an admission of hav ing travelled on the railway from Hebden Bridge.
After the evidence had been given for the railway company, Council Howcroft asked what proof there was that the woman had travelled from Hebden Bridge,
Mr. Booth remarked that the proof was in the statement made to Soon the detective by the woman. afterwards Mr. Booth observed that" Councillor Howcroft did not know the laws of evidence, and later said, "Mind your own damned business." Councillor Howcroft rétored that he
I was minding his business.
Mr. Booth: You are interfering too much and going beyond your powers as a magistrate.
The woman gave evidence of hav ing travelled from Hebden Bridge to Rochdale by means of a, motor-
Councillor How king, whereunen croft observed, IE TE TUT "The railway compongono proved nothing, and are hoping that this woman will trip herself up"
The Clerk: That is a very wrang statement to make from the Bonch. After the magistrates had con- sidered the case in private they do cided to impose a fine of 10%.

Mr. St. John Hutchinson, pro- secuting, said that on the evening of June 16 a police officer holding up traie in Cheyne walk noticed a motor car driven by Cooper com- ing along Chelsea Embankment.
"It went on to the pavement," said Mr. Hutchinson, "recovered, and came straight across at the police officer, who shouted and jumped to one side. The car just missed him, swung round, and went! on the proper side of a refuge, then turned right round to the right and game along to the refuge. It finish. ed its somewhat erratic course by

guage, and clung to some garden railings. At the police station he remarked: "He's made a bloomer. I am not drunk." The divisional surgeon asked him to write down his name...
"In my submission," said Mr. Hutchinson," he was bither suffer- ing from senile decay, or something which made his writing look like that of a very drunken man indeed. When the surgeon asked him if he were suffering from anything he re- plied, "I am suffering from short. age of money."
Dr. J. S. Higga, the divisional surgeon, describing the tests Lo which be pat Cooper, said that he told him to close his eyes, stand to attention and touch his nose with his index finger. "It seemed al- most impossible for him to find where his nose was," said the doctor. The man's pudse was beating very fast-140 to the minute, which was almost double the normal rate. The doctor said that he had since learn- ed that Cooper suffered from lum- bago, rheumatism and sciatica.
Cooper, in evidence, said that he lived at Croydon. On June 10, after calling at Smithfield, he drove to Greenford, where he had two drops of whisky and ten over three hours before the accident. Just be- fóre reaching the Albert Bridge on the drive back from Greenford he felt ill and dazed, and had a very Lindistinct recollection of "what" oc

Very Rare.
Dr. Connolly stated that it is exceedingly rare for a woman of" that age to grow so rapidly. He doubted whether it was possible for most people to grow two inches after adolescence.
In this case, he added, both the parents are tall, and a brother, younger than the patient, and two all 6ft. lin. in elder aisters are height. The case, be considered, is one for investigation as to the cause of the renewed growth.
