SOMERSETSHIRE'S SECOND VICTORY.

THREE SUSSEX PLAYERS SCORE CENTURIES IN

THE SAME INNINGS.

(THROUGH REUTER'S AGENOT.]

LONDON, August 19.

Somersetshire succeeded in gaining their second victory of the season over Glamorgan on the strength of their bowling. White took "the "greater number of the wickets, but Young, broke the morale of the opposing team by taking four wickets for only three

ruba..

A noteworthy feature of the matches was the high score of 560 for nine wickets by Sussex against Kent. The total included three individual centuries. The match, however, has to be decided on the basis of five points to three as in the case of two other fixtures. On the whole the batsmen and bowlers accured about equal honours.

ITALIAN ENTRIES REFUSED.

PRESIDENT

LINER

ROYAL AERO CLUB OBJECTS TO RULES BEING ALTERED,

An acute international "contro- versy has been raised by the deci- sion of the Royal Aero Club of Great Britain to refuse the appli cation of the Royal Italian Aero Club to enter three machines for the Schneider Trophy race for 1831, Licut. Colonel Mervyn O'Gor man, vice-chairman of the club's Schneider Trophy Committee, making the announcement explain:" ed that the Italian application had been refused on the ground that the entries were made subject to certain conditions which were not the conditions laid down by the international committes which con- |trol, the Schneider Trophy.

10

It is freely stated in British Ay. ing circles that the Italian attitude is largely prompted by a keen de sire to have the 4031 Schneider Trophy race in Italian waters. This will be strongly opposed by British fying interests.

1

Britain's Position.

The secretary of the Royal Aero Club of Great Britain addressed

a letter to the Royal Italian Aero- [Club which" stated :-

I am asked to recall to you that the Royal Aero Club of Great Bri- tain by reason of successive vic- tories in the two latest Schneider Trophy competitions is the hoidar of the trophy, and by that fact is in a fiduciary position which al- lows it no latitude to vary from the conditions legally fixed and published in January ́ 1930-the latest date prescribed by the rules for the contest of 1931.

The Royal Aero Club of Great Britain cannot, therefore, accept as valid the altered conditions in- troduced at a subsequent date such is those which you have been good enough to indicate in relation to your application for entry in your latter of June 23.

Although those conditions accord with the discussions at the general conference of the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale on June 11 and 12 I venture to draw your attention to the total of the deposit money per entry which is required as a guarantee of presence and is returnable after the contest, and is foreseen in the conditions ixed in January 1930 by the F.A.I., namely, 200,000 francs (£1,600).

In these circumstances I regret to inform you that your letter of June 23, 1930, does not constitute

an entry,

Abrogated Conditions,

"We have refused the Italian en, tries because they were condition al." said Lieut-Colonel. Mervyn O'Gorman.

"Certain "conditions of entry dif- fering from those in 1929 were made' last January at a meeting of the international committee which con- trols the Schneider Trophy. Then these conditions were abrogated at a general conference of the T.AT. only a few weeks ago. This is what we object to.

for machines, and then have the If entrants are to make plans rules altered within a few months it will make the whole contesta farce.

"We feel that this is a funda mental matter of principle affect ing sport throughout the world, and the F.A.I. alterations con-

stitute a breach of the most ele mentary rules of sport. The Royal Aero Club is not disputing about the amount of entry fee.

The present position, if we ad- opted the Italian proposals, would exactly resemble two entrants for the Derby agreeing to run merely a couple of furlongs and not the whole course.

"We have taken legal opinion
