HONG KONG DAILY PRESS. MONDAY, AUGUST 11, 1930.

THE P. & O. BANKING CORPORATION.

A. DIFFICULT YEAR BUT, SATISFACTORY RESULT.

On the motion of the Chairman, seconded by Mr. W. E. Preston (deputy-chairman), a dividend of 5 per cent., less income-tax, was ap- proved, payable on July 18.

The Chairman proposed a resolu The tenth ordinary general meet-tion increasing the remuneration of ing of the P. 'O. Banking Cor- the directors. He said that he made poration, Limited, "was held on

that proposal with the less hesita tion, as he himself drew no fees as July 11 at 129, Leadenhall Street,

"The Right Hon, the Earl of Inch cape, G.C.S.I., G.C.M.G., K.C.LE. (the chairman), who presided, said: The result of the year's trading has left us with a profit of £107,315 4 4d, which is slightly in ex- cess of that shown in the prevións year,

There has been some variation in our balance-sheet figures which I will proceed to explain. Last year there was a decrease in our loans, and you will observe that this year the figure has been restored to the normal amount to which we have been accustomed.

The special causes which last year induced us to lighten our holdings disappeared, we have increased our loans against such investments.

There is also, as you will see, a gratifying increase in our current, deposit, and other accounts, which have risen from £7,250,000 to over £3,000,000; against these liabilities we are holding a large amount of cash in hand, and with an increase in the item of bullion in hand the figure of our resources available to meet our liabilities on current ac count stands at £1,532,000. advances to customers continue on

The resolution was seconded by Mr. E T. Hargraves and carried unanimously.

Mr. Hargraves proposed a vote of thanks to the chairman, direc- tors, management and staff, re- marking that shareholders might rest perfectly satisfied so long as their interests were in the hands of Lord Inchcape and his colleagues. (Hear, hear.) They had achieved wonderful results in a difficult' year, and he thought it would be the wish of the shareholders to thank the board and management for the admirable way in which they had carried out their duties, (Cheers.)

The vote was seconded by M. Pitt and unanimously accorded, a brief acknowledgment by the Chair- man concluding the proceedings.

Over-Production of Commodities

and Decline in Prices.

Instability in a markets and throughout the world has been the keynote of 'the past year. Bank rate, which as March 31, 1929, was 5 per cent., at the close of our rear had been reduced to per cent. after, undergoing six changes. International money conditions have been affected by these fuctuations

12 per cent.

Throughout the world there has been over-production, more parti- cularly in raw and primary mate- rials for industrial production, I may instance in illustration the large supplies of wheat and cotton, the first of which is estimated to amount of 1,500,000,000 bushels, na against 1,455,000,000 bushels a year ago; while the world's visible supply of cotton is estimated at 1,200,000 bales higher than a year age. Until this surplus of supplies over demand is overtaken by the Consumptive capacity of the world we cannot expect to see a stabili sation of prices aufficient to restore the confidence which has been dis- turbed by the severe depreciation to which I have referred."

Dificulties in India and China. In India and the Far East two additional causes have affected the volume of trade and aggravated the difficulties of the economie condi- tions to which the whole world has been subject. In India an acutë 'hostility to established authority and a boycott of British goods have rendered business very difficult and in many cases impossible, while in China the almost daily continuance of the fall in price of silver has dislocated both the import and ex- port trades and has reacted on the stability of existing trading firms.

In conditions such as..I have sketched above trading has been unusually difficult, and We are greatly indebted to the manage- Ident at home and abroad for the results achieved, and I feel sure you will with to tender our cordial thanks to all our staff at home and abroad for their care and efforts on our behalf,"

Progress of the Allahabad Bank.

Our affiliated bank, the Allahabad Bank, has again, I am glad to say, made good progress. Like all other Indian banka, which must neces sarily hold a large amount of Indian Government securities, they have not escaped the effect of the sharp fall in the prices of these invest ments. A very considerable pro portion of this fall will be recover- ed when these securities mature, and by far the greater proportion of the Allahabad Bank-investments

within the next four years.

The Chairman concluded by mov ing the adoption of the report and accounts.

"

The Right Hon, the Earl of Selborne, K.G.. G.C.M.G., second- cu the resolution, and it was car ried unanimously.

Owen Meredith.

Well you know-how things used to be on Mondays... till you thought of that shattering retort, "All right, you buy me a Frigidaire then f"

Of course, he did in the end-and now Monday sees Ichabod metamòr- phused into volan-vent, since cook's patry has miraculously acquired a flaky lightess (only because he 'ebills it in Frig daire before popp og it in the oven), and the sulad always acema fresh picked, it's so cool and crisp, and everybody wants to know the secret of your household market- ing because they've never enten such tender steak, my dear" (which, of course, is due to Frigidaire again), and he swears Frigidaire would be worth twice its price if only for the difference it makes to beer, and
