THE ALL-AMERICAN AERIAL DERBY.
LEE GEHLBACH FIRST TO COMPLETE 7,000 MILE COURSE.
Detroit, August 1-When Lee Gehlbach piloted bis aeroplanë across the finishing lias of the All- American Aerial Derby here at 2.44 p.m. to-day (Eastern standard' time) he was declared winner of the event and of the G.$13,000 first prize. For the other 16 pilots there will be G.87,000 for second place, G.83,000 for third placer nad a large number of miscellaneous awards offered by cities along the way: Gehlbach will receive some of
the latter.
11
The race started on July 21, at Detroit, the first reach extending to New York, the second back across
the country to Los Angeles. and the 'fical one, being' a return trip to Detroit. Altogether, the distance totalled 7,000 miles. All the con- testants chose their own styles and makes of machines, but they were required to use engines made by the American Cirrus Co., sponsors of
the race.
The contestants had to check in at nine control points and to depart at half-minute intervals after a fixed time each morning. Each lap constituted a race in itself, with the position apparent at all times in the record of elapsed time between con trols. Those in the race might land whenever and wherever they chose, remaining on the ground as long as ther wished, but no time allowance was made for such stops. Flying tinie was computed as all the time between departure from and arrival at controls.
Atlanta, Houston, Los Angeles, Oakland, Ogden, and Omaha each awarded G.81,000 prizes for the laps ending in their respective cities; Douglas gave G.8300. The Detroit Board of Commerce will also give G.$3,000 to be distributed among Pilots other than the first three inaking the best time...

FURTHER ACTIVITY IN
PIECE-GOODS. "
The following is taken from the fortnightly report of the Hong Kong Get ral Chamber of Com- merce:-
Cotton Pisco Goods and Fancy
Cotton Goods.
The activity reported in our last advices has continued and further appreciable quantities of shadow striped poplins have been booked in addition to smaller miscellaneous lots of various other Spring sytics including coloured striped and check poplias, bleached cords, etc.
There has been enquiry for certain descriptions of white shirtings, but prices indicated are quite impos- sible notwithstanding considerable reductions in Lancashire costs,
Cotton values show a downward tendenes and present quotations (7th instant) Mid. Am."Spot ". 1.30d. Eg. Sakel. 12.30d. are lower than when we last reported.
Another report states:- Further business has been settled in shadow striped poplins, coloured striped poplins and plain poplins. Small orders on miscellaneous Hines of Spring fancies have also gone through and there is a good deal of enquiry in general. More business would probably have been done if exchange had remained stendy, but, fluctuations have led buyers to anti- cipate higher rate and to hold off in consequence. Manchester prices. are again easier and if exchange improves a fair amount of business at present impracticable should be- come feasible. Clearances have been satisfactory for the time of the year and local prices remain steady.

Mr. Jones said that he wanted to claim for the local veto proposal which he was trying to urge upon them and which he was working for, that it fitted easily into the licensing system which was unjust and incomplete without it..
"I do not believe that if pub- licans were civil servants there would be a control as good as the one now by Parliament, by justices, and the police," said Mr. Jones, dealing with State control, "I am opposed to nationalisation."
Discussing "What is wrong with the public house?" he answered- "Drink! If you want to improve public housen take drink out of them. It is the root of the trouble in public houses,”
