Mr. R. A. Wadenon appeared on behalf of the China Light and Power Co.

Medical evidence was given by Dr. T., W. Ware, of the Kowloon Mortuary Co., who stated that he found slight abrasions on the de- cessed's chest and right elbow and a black mark on the left hand. The mark might have been made by some tar or some electric wire material. He found that deceased

had died of shock.

Chan Yau, a fellow worker of the deceased, told his Worship that he

and déceased were pulling out nails from a board when he sudder- ly heard a cry and saw deceased holding an electric wire with his left band. He immediately rushed to the deceased and with the assist- ance of other workers he pulled deceased's hand away from the wire with a plank.

Expert evidence was given by Mr. A. E. Clarke, senior inspector of works, P.W.D., who stated that he examined the building and found at the corner of "Chapoo Road that the China Light and Power Co. had a pole on which was terminated a three-core under-cable. The line conductor, although apparently in- sulted, was saturated owing to the heavy rain at that time, and the condition of the first balcony of the building in which deceased was working was wet also by the rain and thus enabled the deceased to form a circuit through his body to earth. The voltage was probably from 150 or 200 volts:

I also observed two of the line conductors running alongside the building tied to the bamboo scaffold- ing around the building, apparently. done by the_contractors."

Inspector Elston intimated that deceased might have accidentally touched the wire by leaning over the scaffolding,

ATTEMPTED MURDER

IN SHANGHAI...

TWO FOREIGNERS ARRESTED.

SALT GABELLE' OFFICIÁL SHOT.

What the French Police believe to have been a carefully planned attempt at murder and robbery by two foreign residents of the French Concession occurred on. Hungino Road, Shanghai, last Saturday.

Mr. Pedro Loureiro, Inspector in the Salt Revenue Department of the Ministry of Finance, resid- 0g at 110 Avenue Haig, was shot by one of the foreigners after be and his chauffeur had been chased across the fields.

The two alleged gunmen have heen arrested and have given their names as Jean Isaac and Fetor Zavalin.

Mr. Loureiro' wound has prov- ed to be supperficial and he is ex- pected to recover within a few weeks,

The shooting" took place when Mr. Loureiro, who was returning by car from a visit to friends near- the Hungine Golf Club, found that a powerful touring car had been drawn across the road near a bridge. The car had no rights and appeared to have been abandoned. M. Loureiro instructed his chauf feur to alight and ascertain what had happened. When the chauffeur was approaching the darkened car, aman suddenly jumped out of a creek by the side of the road and pointing a pistol at him demanded

pump and petrol.

Two Armed Men.

The chauffeur ran back to Mr. Loureiro, closely followed by the man. When this man was repeat- ing his demand to Mr. Loureiro another foreigner, also armed, ap- peared on the scene and shouted that besides the pump and petrol they also required whatever else was movable.

Mr. Loureiro protested that he had neither pumo nor spare petrol. hut offered to give the men some from the tank of his Car, Upon this offer being refused, he intimated his willingness to give the men & lift to a place from where. they could telephone to a Garage

Without further argument, one of the men then shot Mr. Loureiro through the arm and attempted to shoot the chauffeur in the head.

Mr. Mr. Loureiro and the chauf feur immediately jumped from the car and ran into adjacent paddy fields in an effort to escape, de they realized that the men were desperate. The wound in Mr. Loureiro's arm was superficial and during the ensuing chase across the field he did not notice that he had lost a good deal of blood.
