TABLE-TOP FLYING.

MACHINE TO TEACH AVIATION AT HOME.

A machine to teach the elementa of flying the Curtiss wind tunnel- which has recently reached Eng. land, was shown to a gathering of aeroplane experts in London

It is the first of its kind in Eng. land, and has aroused keen interest. The idea is to reproduce as far. as possible the conditions in pilot's seat, to teach the feel of the controls and to show how they actually operate and bow they cause. the craft to

execute

The pilot" is provided with a real joystick, a rudder-bar and throttle, etc., exactly as in the cock pit of an aeroplane. These are fitted under a table at which he sits. On the table is a glass case, with;; et the forward end, a motor and propeller to project a wind up to 70 m.p.h. through it, this being controlled by the opening of the throttle. In the centre of the casu is & captive aeroplane in model form, and the rear end of the case is open, so that the pilot will feel the wind in his face exactly ps in real aircraft.

The model, a miniature mono- plane of about 18 ins, apan, is free to rise and fall on a vertical shaft, through which the controls pass to the aeroplane, and is so pivoted that it can assume the positions of banking, climbing, or diving. It. has all the control surfaces of a full-sized-ceroplane, and these are all operated by the pilot's controls referred to. When the throttle is opened and the gale starts the machine can be taken off, banked, ghallód. dixed sted and finall landed.

The invention, the European rights of which have been acquired for some time to come by Shell-Mex,. Ltd., will be demonstrated exten- sively as part of the Shell-Mex. campaign to popularise flying-

However, these circles with their strong individualism could not in the long run compete politically with the stronger organized class parties of the Left and Right, while". the younger generation, grown up in the radicalism of the after-war years, demanded a more active and aggressive policy than the Liberal- ism of the Democratic Party was Able and willing to offer. Thus, when to-day two-thirds of the 400 members of the party's executive voted against a minority of but four in favour of dissolving the party and joining the newly-formed. "State Party," thereby ratifying the commitments entered into by the party's leaders two days ago, it caused little surprise in German political quarters.

reception though doubts are being expressed whether under the new name it will have sufficient access to its parliamentary strength to enable it to play anything like a leading role in the next Reichstag. The main question" in this respect is still how many members of the German People's Party will, besides the Young German Order, join the new-party in order to create a stronger Left-Centre group in the German Parliament,

A Curious Complication. However, it has quite suddenly hecome uncertain whether the new party will actually be able to make its official appearance poder the name so far chosen as when to-day the announcement of its foundation was made, strong protest was filed by a certain master tailor who two years ago, infamed by patrio- tic enthusiasm, founded a club. which he called." State Party" and whose name he took the precaution to have officially registered where. fore he protests against the unlaw ful use of his property by the Democrats and the Young German Order He has even refused an offer of the new party to buy him off but so far he refuses to give in and has even filed a suit with the Berlin Courts against the new party.

What happened was this: A portion of the port side of the step was ruptured and part of it gave way and fell down, forming a flap. HE Undersigned bave received

The result was that there was a much greater lifting power on that side, and the boat overturned that way. We are producing evidence which brings us to the definite con- clusion that that is what happen- ed.

"From the condition which Mr. Cooper found we have been driven to the conclusion that the rupture was caused by a blow from some object floating in the water.

Mr. Little, & naval architect, bad also inspected the boat on the instructions of Lloyd's under: writers, and he had come to a con clusion than it was something other than a lack of structural strength which caused the disaster.

A police-constable said that Mr. Halliwell's body was recovered so yards from where the boat sank. His hands were clenched in front of him and in his. left hand was piece of paper. It appeared as though he had been writing

Disaster Survivor. Michael John Wilcccks, the sur vivor of the disaster, said:

"Sir Henry Segrave did not offer the job to me until he had care- fully explained the risk and inform ed me that the enterprise was high- ly dangerous. Twice previously I had been capsized in speed boats.

"Miss England was remarkably stable and rode, smoothly...

Suddenly I felt a dull thud which seemed to be on the port side. Up to the that moment every thing had continued to function perfectly, Immediately afterwards
