The Falklands were discovered in 1582 by Davis and were visited by Hawkins in 1894, but for centuries their ownership has been disputed, Britain, France, Spain and later Argentine laying claim to the vari ous islands. At one time, Argen- tine established a settlement there but it was destroyed by the Ameri-
