A TON OF DRUGS. NEW POSTAL RATES. CORRESPONDENCE.

£800,000 CARGO SEIZED IN FRANCE

HEROIN AS SUGAR,

Astounding disclosures have been made concerning the discovery and seizure of Marseilles, the headquarters of the drug traffic in France, of £500,000 worth of heroin, said to be a ton in weight, the largest ever made by the French authorities.

Those who are responsible for the severe blow at the vast interna- tional organisation of drug traffic kers are two modest inspectors-M Thalamas and M. Lambi, who acted without day help from the Customs police and at the risk of their lives, for they had been watched and followed from Paris by an agent of the drug dealers.

SIR, Is it not regrettable that some of our tramway officials can- not prove their identity unless they are in the office ?

The case in point is this: I waa travelling on a tram yesterday morning, and as I did not have to go very far did not trouble to go upstairs, but stood beside the motor-

man.

I had not gone far when I noticed a European waiting for a car, and as he was evidently wait- ing for me to alight before getting on, I told him that I was not get- ting off yet, and asked if he wanted to come up, as the same time moving away to make place for him..

The in- spectors put two and two together and left for Marseilles a day before the Italia was due there. About 50 huge boxes were landed from the ship.

When M. Thalamas and M. Lambli arrived at the store room where the cargo had been taken and informed the Customs authori- ties that they wanted to inspect the merchandise they not only met with a cold reception, but were sur- rounded by a number of foreign merchants who

The inspectors eventually found, skilfully hidden among these goods a large number of big tin boxes. By this time the merchants who bad so violently protested before had all disappeared. In the boxes was a white stuff done up like sugar loaves, which proved to be heroin.

The boxes were-officially-to be shipped on an Indian steamer for Hamburg, but it is believed that they were intended for agents of drug traffickers in Marseilles.

The need for efficient sales man ager was stressed by Sir Francis Goodenough in an address to the sales managers session of the Ad- vertising Convention at Hastings last month.

He said that the employment of efficient sales managers was a vital essential to the maintenance of British trade...

Industry must realise that such managers could only be secured if employers were prepared to co- operate with educationists in en- suring, first, that our systems pro- vided the best preparation for a commercial career conducted on sound principles; and, second, that those entering an such career could obtain post-school ur post-colleged education and train. ing.
