LOSS TO U.S.R.C.
OMAR RUMJAHN RETURNING" TO COLONY,
[Br. "SERVER"]
With everybody discussing when and from where the typhoon is coming, it seems rather out of place to sit down and write tennis notes.
As far as tennis is concerned, it will no doubt be a wash-out this week-end, for even if it does clear up now, the courts are so well under water that I doubt whe- they will dry in time. There were two sunny afternoons this week, and some of the Clubs took full advantage of it and played off some of their Axtures. On Monday, the Indian Recreation Club easily
mixed doubles, but the surprise of that particular division was the heavy defeat of the Kowloon Cricket Club, last season's champions, at the hands of the United Services Recreation Club. The latter were without the services of Mrs. Cape The following are the positions who has left, or will be leaving, the

In view of the uncertainty of the weather, Mr. A. F. P. Chapman, the Captain of the English team, has asked that Goddard, the young Gloucestershire fast bowler, should be available to play in the fourth Test match against the Australians, which is due to begin in Manches- ter on Friday,

but bowlers still live in hopes that Thompson; D. S. Hill and F. F. accounted for the University in the National and American Leagues
they will be allowed to complete their programme. There is really little interest for the majority of the teams in the league who started out with their eyes on the champion- ship shielda, but their enthusiasm has not waned one bit. They are left far behind by two teams in ench division running neck to neck. and it is this unusual feature which is giving players and supporters a lat of anxiety. ...
In the, early part of the season it was possible to see through the teams and guess who would be the likely winners, but these guesses proved to be as erratic as the form of the teams. If the records of the two leading teams in ench division are looked up, it will be seen that some of them have been permitted to remain in their high places by gaining the points on more than one occasion by a small margin. "The whole outlook is so uncertain at the moment considering these incon- sistencies that picking out any one of the two leaders as the champions in their divisions would be a poor guess and nothing more.

Mrs. Cape did extremely well in the Forest Hills tournaments before she came to the Colony, and is ranked tenth in America's list of lady players. I only had the plea sure of seeing the lady in action once, when she gave a very good exhibition of baseline driving, send- ing across some extremely good cross-court shots. With all respect to some of the Colony's men ex- ponents, I am of the opinion that she will give one or more of them a jolly good match. No doubt her departure will be very much felt by the U.S.R.C., especially as they are now so well-placed in the fight for championship honours in this division.
The many friends in the Colony of Omar Kumjahn will be glad to learn that there is a possibility oi his taking part in the local open championships in February, 1931. "Omar" is well-known to followers of lawn tennis here, but for the benefit of those who have not kept trace of his records since he left for the North some six years ago, I will give a brief aummary of his activities on the court since then. For five years, he was doubles champion of Tientsin with his brother C. A. L Rojahn, who is showing up so well in local tennis now, while in 1927 and 1929, he was runner-up in the Open Singles of that port. He figured in inter- port matches in 1928, 1028 and 1999, £3 and did very well on all three oc- casions, both in the doubles and singles. If my memory serves me, I think he was runner-up in the local Open Singles in 1993, while in the same year, he won the doubles championship here with his cousin "E.D.", who is perhaps our best doubles player at the moment. ing year after which he left to take up a position in Tientsin.

Mme. Ponselle is one of the very few prima donnas who have slim figures, but her slender beauty is due not to dieting, not to expensive treatments, but to cycling.
