The incident happened in Titlis. the ampital of Georgia, just south of the Caucasus mountains, and half way between the Black Sea and the Caspian.

In consequence of the sharp rise in the price of fire-wood, there has heen a healtheir demand for coal. During of last month some 33,020 tons of foreign coal were imported.

And here, in royal style," says Mr. Farson, "the Russians chter- sained him, plying him with caviare from the Caspians, the smoked sal- mon of the Baltic, and the wines and champagne of the Caucasus.”

The trouble came when a

dis. tinguished Georgian official "stood up and made the mass rousing speech of the evening,

"He was overcome by it and the wine,"

and saya Mr. Farson, with a brimming glass in his hand he walked unsteadily along the table to the King of Afghanistan. I salute you,' he said, and, drain- ing his glass he leaned down, with the warm-hearted manner of his native mountains, to kiss the king

Amanullah stood up. He made a sign. And then, as the appalled Georgians stared, Amanullah and his saite left the banquet-room. He left Tiflis at once, without wait ing for the three days of fêting that had been planned for him.

"The news flashed to Moscow. Mescow demanded that the official should explain himself. But this the smiling man of the photograph fa photograph an exhibition at a shop in Tiflis]) could not do, as he had put a bullet through his head,

Of Amanullah's visit to London Mr. Farson says:-**

"In England he slept in Buck- ingham Palace, und queer tales were told there of the domestic habits of his suita,"

Mr. Farson describes life in. Rus- sja to-day as he saw it during a 3ear's visit, travelling all over the country, talking with peasants" in their huts and visiting all kinds of "out-of-the-way places.

Without Bias.

. He seems to write without bias. and without any desire to grind a Soviet or anti-Soviet axe.

"The Communists day there is no God," he observes; "they laugh at priests and priesthoods, and yet theirs is one of the most austére. indefatigable, and unself-seeking brotherhooda in the world. If it is not a religion-which term they despise-it is a galt. ...

They are the whippers-in, the task-masters, the slave-drivers, if you will, of the most ignorant masa of peasantry in the world. A hun- dred and twenty million peasants almost bestial in their stupidity. . "I was surprised to find that only one out of about every hun- dred Russians was a Communist. I was surprised to find them a brotherhood amazingly similar to the Jesuits"

The book, which is published by Eyre and Spottiswoode at 15a, con- tains a number of reproductions of political and anti-religious Com-. munist postera. -

prices have consequently advanc- ed. Latest quotations vary from Tls. 4.67 to Tls., 6.52"

Large quantities of wolfram ore has been imported from the North River districts lately. Demand being limited. prices have dropped by several dollars per picul. A further decline in prices is Hikely. Ba,

The total quantity of raw silk exported abroad from Canton dur- ing the first half of the present" month was some 2,439 bales and waste silk 1,123 bales, showing a decrease of 450 bales of raw silk and 1.038 bales of waste silk dur. ing the corresponding period of last year.

*

The cotton yarn market was fairly active on Tuesday, demand by merchants in Pakhoi being brisk. Fine yarns were compara- tively less in demand and prices remained unchanged. According to a Shanghai telegram, over 700 bales were sold on Tuesday: The price of No, 24 fine yarns rose by dollar per bale, while quotations of other varieties were normal.

"

The importation of foreign goods has shown a decrease due to the rise in prices caused by the ex- change. The buying power of, the Public has been especially weak during the past few weeks.

The foreign sugar market "has been rather active recently due to limited arrivals. Prices have gone up and are likely to advance still more in the near future.

DECLINE OF WHEAT PRICES. AFFECTING BUSINESS.

are

Washington, July 15.-Observers here to-day predicted that the West- ern demand for equalization of farm relief will be revived at the December "short "session" of Con- gress as a result of the sharp de- cline of wheat prices, affecting busi- ness, markets and banks throughout the country.

meanwhile Farm leaders awaiting President Hoover's sug- gestions for possible remedies of a situation which cannot but have a considerable repercussion unfavour- ably upon the record of the pre- Bent Republican Administration."

Dissatisfaction over the recently enacted tariff appears to be wide spread, and the farmers are parti cularly angry over the fact that this measure. Which they had ex- pected would prove of value in raising the prices of their products. has done them little good in that respect while increasing the cost of many manufactured articles which they must buy.
