In Their Own Desire," the picture now showing at the Queen's, Miss Norman Shearer is seen in modern problem-play-a variation on the ever-puzzling theme of the clash between "modern" and "old-evidence of scoring a tremendous fashioned" ideas. Miss Shearer is success, seen in the part of the independent young woman of to-day who knows what she wants when she wants it, and is determined to have it. There is plenty of action in the story, and Robert Montgomery, Lovis Stone, Bolle Bernett, and Helene Allard each have excellent parts in the play.
Paramount has filmed "Abie " on a big scale, building it into a mighty comedy-drama of love and tolerance, with frequent touches of clever humour, and a cast that is ideally suited to the various roles made famous on the stage for so many years. "Abie's Irish Rosa"? teaches that love can conquer all- racial misunderstanding, and that bigotry and the jealousy of deeds is all wrong. Never before has such a stirring tale so beautifully told been presented.
The story begins at a time when unaappiness enters the home of Marlett, who decides to separate from his wife in favour of another. Meanwhile, Lally and Jack (Miss Shearer and Robert Montgomery} |· ̈*. enter on a romance which causes a serious tangle in the new relation ships. In a farewell meeting of the young couple aboard a motor boat, they are caught in a storm which is portrayed with vivid reality. The father rushes home to take charge of the search and his air. plane finds the couple after three days. This leads to a reconciliation self to be typically Irish as Rose- between the parents, who step aside to let the young couple roalisemary. J. Farrell MacDonald is the "Their Own Desire."
