The Azares will be the first stop" for the Shamrock on her long and slow journey. Her convoy, Sir Thomas steam yacht Erin, will refuel there. The Erin will carry a large supply of oil which can be used to smooth the troubled waters of the Atlantic if Shamrock V. gets into difficulties. The crew of the challenger, which is about the same size as one of Columbus' ships, are. hoping for fair weather, but are confident that the yacht can wea ther any storm. Her deep-sea ris includes a trysail, a square sail, a jib and staysail, and a jigger-mast.
A month's provisions aboard the challenger include hard tack and a supply of fresh water. The Erin is equipped with wireless, and will signal the correct time every day at noon, broadcast from the Elfel Tower station in Paris, Shamrock V's navigator will take the sun daily in the usual way and check his own position. The Erin will keep within hail at all times. Shamrock V. carries plenty of life. belts and the deck is rigged with life-lines.
