It is, therefore, correct to main. tain that in Newton's theory space fulfilled the functions of a physi cal reality, a fact which Newton himself fully realised, although it. was forgotten by later thinkers. Summing up, we may say, rather metaphorically, that space, brought to light by the material object, and made a scientific reality by Newton, has, during the past century, swal lowed up both ether and light, and is now about to swallow up the gravitational and electromagnetic fields and corpuscles too, so that it will be left as the sole theoretic al representative of reality."
