New York, July 10-A sharp recovery eccurred on the New York Stock Exchange to-day, and the shorts were compelled to cover in most groups, says, the daily review of the Dow Jones Financial News Agency.

C:S Steel led in the advance, and closed up 21 to 1391, bus the railroads showed the biggest gains and the Dow Jones average for 20 rail issues was up 2.77 to 132.28. Pennsylvania closed up a half to 73: New York Central closed up. two points to 102; B, & O. was up 2th 106; Canadian Pacific held at 188; Rock Island was up a point to 103: Union Pacific was up to 218 Southern Pacific was up two points to 1174; and Erie was up a .point to 43.

The general list was quite steady, and new highs were made in many issues at the close of the market.

NO DEMAND FROM, CHINA.

The Société Indo-Chinoise 'de Commerce, Saigen, have issued the foliowing report under date July

5:-

During the last week the market has been very quiet with practic- ally no businesa.

Contrary to what was, expected there has been no demand from China From Juva also, since the small business effected during last

week, no further demand has been

received.

Demands from France have been very poor with business possible only at very low prices.

Consequently, prices went down again, and on the closure of the market, they were back to their starting point of the rise last week with a weak tendency,

Closing prices stand as follows: No. 1 Long 95 per cent, and No. 1 Round 25 per cent.-124 francs per 100ks. 7.75 guilders per Jave pikol; 6.20 yen per picul; 10/7, per cwt.

No. 2 Japan 40 per cent.-130 francs per 100ks; 7.48 guilders per Java pikol; 6 yet per picul; 10/3 per cwt.
