The fortnightly repart issued by the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce states:-

Cotton Piece Gooda. Apart from tentative enquiry, at unworkable limits, for certain de- acriptions of Light Cotton Fancies there is nothing of impurtance to report.

Dealers generally find it quite impossible to pay present, ifver Lanenshire parities of present prices, and declining local market prices for most Japanese Cotton Textiles aggravate an already acute price impasse in respect of Lan- cashire productions. The best feature of the market at present is that clearances continue to be fairly good, with local prices of most descriptions, alightly firmer. There has been some enquiry for Cotton Mattings, but owing to the depreciation of the dollar, replac. ing cost is too far above the market price to permit new business and this condition applies to most of the other lines of Spring Fancies. The usual orders for December January shipment still remain unsettled and unless a move is made, very soon. it will be difficult to arrange de- liveries. Manchester prices are steady, but in the absence of sup- port from the world markets, lower-in rates may be expected.

Woollens,

There is some enquiry for "spot" cargo in certain lines where loed! stocks are low, and prices for most woollens are firmer. Wool prices in. Bradford have advanced from the level which was reached this Spring and the general tone of the wool market has improved. Woollens ordered by the Hong Kong dealers earlier in the year, are expected to yield good profit this season and may place the market in a better position to meet the higher replac- ing costs when re-ordering.

"OLD CONVICTION TO STAND.

ECHO OE 14-YEAR OLD CRIME:-

The excellent work which is be ing done by the Royal Navy in charting the seas and making the oceans free of dangers and obstrue tions is emphasised by the report, issued on June 6, on Admiralty Surveys for the year 1929. There are eight surveying vessels, four at home and four abroad, and of the latter the Herald was employed off Borneo and China; and the Iroquois, chiefly in the Malacca Straits, also ran test lines of sound- ings in Johore Strait, which has aa importance in connection with

the new naval base at Singapore. A statistical summary shows that 45 new charts for general purposes were published during the year," in addition to 13 for special purposes. During the year 2,167 Admiralty notices to mariners were published. It is significant that more rocks and dangers (87) were discovered by the surveyng ships last year than at any time since the war, the highest previous total, being 45 in
