"DID WE BREAK THE RECORD"?
SEGRAVE'S DYING QUESTION,
GRAPHIC DETAILS OF THE "MISS ENGLAND "· DISASTER.
The London rasil just to hand brings full details of the terrible disaster at Windermere on June 13, when Miss England II. was wrecked through striking a submerged tree when travelling at over, 100 miles an hour.
Sir Henry Segrave had achieved his ambition. His official speed in Miss England II. just before the disaster was declared to have been DS.78 miles an hour, the previous highest, achieved by the United States, being 90,25,

Sir Henry came round for about two minutes. He obviously did not know where he was, for be jubilantly asked 'Did we break the record and then became uncon. scious again. He was taken askore to a private house while I got back

all was well.
Without pausing. Sir Henry, hav-| ing successfully turned, drove his boat back down the mile stretch.
To those who were watching from the hill it seemed as if the run was some seconds better, but hefore any calculations could be måde Miss England was onec-more tearing up the lake to cover the mile for the third time.
The Crash,
Miss England II., fitted with a new bronze propeller, waa in the water ni two o'clock. The two official time-keepers, Colonel"Lind- say Lloyd and Mr. George Rey- nolds, took up their positions at Red Nab and Wray Castle, which represented the ends of the measur- ed nautical mile, and opposito

The clerk of the course, Major Pattinson, speed- ed up the lake in his launch to clear channel between the scores of launches and rowing-boats which were dotted about on the water while Miss England and her crew of three "aboard were towed by Miss London (Sir Henry's launch) to within three-quarters of a mile of the beginning of the measured

Crowds of people had gathered on Adelaide Hill, a piece of rising ground commanding a bird's-eye view of the lake.
Segrave's Constant Question.
Mr. A. B. Peck, Rear-Commodore of the Windermere Motor-boat
Club, was with Sir Henry Segrave when he died. He described the tragic last hours as follows;-
"We carried him up to the house on a temporary stretcher. He was attended by three doctors, who found that the right thigh was broken, that the ribs were broken on the right side, and that one rib had penetrated the right lung, which caused hemorrhage.
"Lady Segrave had watched the start from the shore and walked three or four hundred yards to the house to meet ua. She was with Sir Henry to the end. Sir Henry remained conscious until within a moment or two of his death. He kept asking if he had broken the Without dropping from her speed world's record. Lady Segrave told of one hundred miles an hour, Mishim that he had, and later she England gave a violent swerve to was able to tell him what speed the left,, turned over in a smother he had done. Ele died at 5.15.
Then the scent was oblijerated by launchea converging in from all sides of the lake. Captain Freeman and Mr. P. F. King had been manauvring half-way down the measured mile to get a photograph of Mist England as it came past for the third time. Mr. King stood with his camera on the bows of the launch waiting to map the button.
"Miss England was directly op- posite us," said Mr. King, when her bows appeared to lift, and There was not a breath of air to without warning she turned over rule the surface of the lake, which and I saw the men thrown out. was grey and dull. The air, wan

Off in a Cloud of Black Smoká,, Sir Henry climbed to his seat between the two white-helmeted mechanics, and the engine roared its warning. Clouds of black smoke poured out of the vertical exhaust pipes, died away, and were left floating over a white turmoil of broken water, for Miss England had suddenly moved forward.
Dived to Sir Henry's Help. "Just as he became inert I saw it was Sir Henry Segrave, and I told Freeman to bear straight to him. I dived overboard and grab bed him just as he was going down. Another launch faster than ours had now come up, so I dragged Sir Henry to it and clambered abroad, and then helped to drag him out of
the water.
Before he went out for the at- tuck on the record he remarked jocularly to his friends that it was Friday the thirteenth, and he won- dered what would tappen. He dis- cussed with me what would happen if they got thrown into the water. because the water, he said, would be as hard as a board."%
The Dead Rolls-Royce Engineer. Mr. V. Halliwell, whose wife had accompanied him to the Lake Dis- trict for the trial, had been with the Rolls-Royce Company in Derby for five years. He was extremely popular in the works. Mr. Halli- well was an engineer's tester, for five years engaged in the experi- mental department. He was re- 48 а elever mechanic, garded familiar in particular with high- speed engines. He and his wife, whose parents live in the Bristol district, bad resided in Chain Lane, Mickleover, near Derby. They have n boy aged two and a half years.
Mr. Wilcocks was picked up by the bont of Major Pattinson, the clark of the course, and Lord Breck nock, in Miss London, undertook the search for Mr. Halliwell. The body of the last-named, however, was not recovered until later,
