Trooping the Colour. Again Londoners were provided with an inspiring military spectacle

on the Horse. Guards Parade-the Trooping of the Colour-the Arst official celebration of the King's 6th birthday. The King unfortu nately was unable to attend, and was represented by the Prince of Wales. The Queen was with the Duke of Connaught and other mem- bers of the Royal family, at a window overlooking the parade.

Following Major Nugent, the Brigade-Major of the Brigade of Guards, and four troopers of the Life Guards was the Prince in scarlet uniform. Behind him were the other Princes and officers of various regiments. They were fol- lowed by Military Attaches of cther countries, and, four khaki-clad re- presentatives of the Dominions, all on white horses.

AS

The crowd was almost as colour- tul the parade-ground, and spectators scrambled to get a view in every possible way. Every Tin dow of the Admiralty was packed. and there were people even in the crow's-nest at the foot of the use- less maste

As the glorious pro cession passed pac realised its dignity and: tradition, apart from all the colour and the glitter, Soon the slow time changed to quick for another march past, and then the Prince rode forward and took his place in the procession back along the Mall to Buckingham Palace,

Home-Coming to Sussex,

A big home-coming of Sussex people resident in the United States of America is being planned by the Thompson Travel Bureau, Philadelphia, one of the best-known toure arganisers in the States. Mr. Thompson played a prominent part in bringing American Scouts to the International Jamboree in England in 1923.

A Nightingale Year. Nature writers describe this as a great English nightingale year. The bird of tuneful note can be beard at many places near London, and is so faithful to its haunts that the Automobile Association bas. béen able to issue a long list telling motorists the hours at which the birds can be heard singing near many, main roads. Such famous beauty spots. as Burford Bridge, Dorking, Newland's Corner, Jack son's Corner near Guildford, Whit-

Foch, Memorial,

soldier on behalf of the British An impressive tribute to a great nation was paid by the Prince of Wales when he unveiled the statue of Marshal Foch in Grosvenor Gardens. He said that although the Marshal may be regarded as the greatest military teacher of his time, yet he never ceased to be a learner. His rule of life was simple to serve God and defend his country, He was nerer unduly elated by victory and never de- pressed by defeat. It was a simple yet impressive ceremony, and was attended by Madame Foch and her two daughters, the Duke and Prince Arthur of Connaught, and other notabilities who had helped Foch to win the War. The Prince pulled the gold-taeselled cord and the tricolour and the Union Jack fell apart, revealing the bronze statuc of Foch.

The Zoo.

One of the latest open-air attrac tions of summer evenings offered by London is the Zoo. The Fellowa have decided that instead of closing at 8 o'clock the Zoo will remain open until 11 o'clock every Thurs day until the end of August. But that is not all. The Zoa has been transforthed into a veritable fairy- land, with coloured lights, and. diners from the West End in their long timsy dresses and dinner jackets.

Many of the animals wake up to play towards sunset, especially

ley Common, south of Godalming, the younger, members. The baby the wends between Godstone and elephant-seal wallows in its large South Godstone near the London-green tank dreaming of the Falk: Eastbourne road, and woods one mile from Oxted are among those named. While motorists are re- minded by the Automobile Associa- tion that the birds are very easily disturbed by the noise of running engines and horn-blowing, other

land Isles-where it came from about a month ago. The baby rhino clumsily plays with his two" gost companions-a most amusing sight. Then we pass on to the orangatang tea-party, which is most entertain- ing. When they take their seats

and collect inscets from the surface of the water. Perhaps the most beautiful of all and also a new comer to England is the Natal Kingfisher, a bird of most lovely Lealotring.

Royal Military Tournament, The first performance of the

Military Tournament at Olympia was attended by the Queen leading Princess Elizabeth into the Royal box. It had been hoped that the King would be there, but he un- fortunately was prevented by an

fortunately is attack of rheumatism, which un a prevalent com- plaint. this year.. The tournament is as good as usual, and spectators numbered over 10,000. The Royal Guards of Honour of the NAVY. Army nad Air Force were inspected by the Duke of Gloucester and Prince George. Little Princess Elizabeth was in a high state of excitement, all the time, but the firing of guns so frightened her

that she was handed over to her nurse.

With modern armaments and equipments it becomes in- creasingly difficult to stage items of interest to the public, and. fre quently different theatrical page ants are staged Tanks cause a lot of interest and not a little amuse- "whippet" can play more pranks ment, as an adept with a modern than could an old Ford car, and a bucking- frequently resembles

horse.

At Old-Time Music. Hall. Collin's Music Hall, London's oldest variety hall, situated in Islington, is to continue, as its lesser, Mr. S. Burney, is deter- mined whatever happens to keep this old ball running. This is all the more remarkable as Mr. Burney controls many cinemas in London: One is glad to hear that a music- hall still remains where such_great artists, as Dan Leno, Marie Lloyd, Harry Randall frequently appear- ed Collins is to be the home of drama, and a "A London Actress," "Jack the Ripper," followed by will be played. The price of the best stall in the house is to be 18, and prices vary down to 3d. in- cluding tax. The building remains nearly as originally planned, and up to a few years ago beer waa served to the audience in their sents
