MURDER TRIAL IN TIENTSIN.
EUROPEAN WOMAN ACQUITTED.
ACCUSED OF STABBING MAN IN QUARREL.
The trial of Mrs. Catherine Hadley on a charge of having murdered one Alexander at Tientsin aa April 2, 1930, was concluded at H.M. Supreme Court, Tientsin, be fore Judge G. W. King, on June.
13,
The jury returned a verdict of "not guilty" and his Lordship dis- charged Mrs. Hadley from custody.
It was alleged that Mrs. Hadley, who acquired British cationality by marrying & British sen captain in Shanghai, had stabbed the man Alexander during a quarrel. Alex- notorious character ander was a and had lived by selling newspapers. She was subsequently detained by the Chinese police but banded over to the British Consular authorities after. representations had been made.
Mr. V. Priestwood, Assistant Crown Advocate, prosecuted: Mr. F. Kent appeared for the defence. Evidence of Character.
John Robson Watson, accountant at the Chartered Bank, Tientsin, said Mrs. Hadley had been in bis service for 9 years from" about October, 1927, up to the time of these events. She, was nurse to his chiki and both he and bis wife were quite satisfied with her. The child was very fond of her and she was devoted to the child.
In his speech for the defence, Mr. Kent said that the fundamental issue was who struck the blow which killed deceased? The defence sub- mitted with sincerity and confidence that the blow, was self-inflicted. In support of that contention they had the evidence of accused who had faced the greatest ordeal that anybody could face, the ordeal ci giving evidence in a case in which her own life was at stake. They End seem the sort of woman she was, that she was excitable but on the other hand she was, frank. There was no hesitancy when ques-, tions were put to her she answer- ed those questions, as far as one could see, frankly and honestly. Referring to the absence motive, Mr. Kens said it was very difficult to find any reason for the alternative, namely, that accused had struck the blow. He submitted that the only motive would be the motive of jealousy "and he submitted there was not a scintilla of evidence to suggest there was any porsun of or could be whom accused was

Summing-up For Crown. Mr. Priestwood said he thought the jury could only come to the conclusion that accused and Alex- ander were layere and had been so for some time past. When she enme to see, Alexander on the after- noon of April 2 it was something sufficiently important to keep her waiting for him for two hours and for her to follow the deceased man immediately he left to go to his, zoom. It might be circumstantini evidence when two people went inte a room and one came out alive and the other is dead, but when a per son, came out and said "I have struck him," he thought it left the realm of circumstantial evidence for iomething much more tangible.
His Lordship, summing up, said he would conclude by reminding the jury of their duty. In this country they still had extraterritorin rights na subjects of the British Empire and these included the right of being tried by the British. Courts in China-by jury, certainly, in the euse of murder. The decision was entirely in the hands of the juries. In their hands lay the fate of this woman.
