RECOVERY AFTER SLUMP.

New York, June 19.—A substan. tial, recovery was manifest on the Now York Stock Exchange to-day, following several days of heavy battering of values and heavy short covering caused the market to show considerable improvement, says thé daily review of the Dow Jones Financial News Ageney,

One of the major bullish factors was the reduction in the New York Federal Reserve Bank rate from 3 per cent to 2 percent. Call money remained at the 33 per cent, level set yesterday..

Gains Made by Stocks. Stacks gained from one to six points on the general, list, while there was an advance of as much as ten points among some of the specials Profit-taking sales in the session did not affect the trend of prices.

The volume of trading declined, and today's total sale of atocks came to 3,702,500 shares.

Traders favoured U.L. Steel, of the industrial group, and it closed at 181, up 3 from yesterday. Bethlehem moved up 2 points to! close nt 831. The Dow Jones average was up 10.13 to 29.07 for the day.

Among other industrials, Westing house jumped 71 to close at 1401; Eastman Kodak was up $7 to 2051; Du Pont was up 61 to 105; Ameri- can Can was up 63 to 1211; Union Carbide was up 5 to 68; General Electric was up 43 to 723 and American Rolling Mill was up a to 613.

Buoyancy in Utulties.

The utilities were buoyant and the Dow Jones average for 20 issues was up 4.30 to 83.60. American Tel. & Tel, moved up to 2083, International Tel. & Tel. was up. 3 to 441 Indio Corp. was up four points to 381; Southern California Edison was up 2: Columbia Gas gained 5 to close at 663; and Con- solidated Gas closed at 1103, up 5.

Commodity prices improved with the advance in the stock market. Wheat was firm, cotton steady and rubber and sugar were also firm. Coffee alone of the commodities Was CAST:

9.24 to Pennsylvania gained 3 to close at 72: New York: Central was up four points to 162; Rock Island declined half a point to 103; B. & O was up 2 to 104; Union Pacific was up 4 to 214 and Northern Pacific was up 4 to 75.

General Motors gained 18 to close at 41; Chrysler was up half a point to 901; Hudson was up f to 31 and Packard was up to 138.

At a meeting of the Chinese silver closed at .343 compared to .34. -Bankers, Association held on Wed-yesterday. neaday, a unanimous decision was reached by the committee to re- duce interest on monies deposited in Chinese banks, which are mem- hers of the Association.

It was decided that the interest for yearly fixed deposits should not exceed 4 per cent. Deposits for six months, it was arranged, should not enmmand more than 3 per cent, and no more than 2 per cent. should be paid on current accounts.

The step taken is undoubtedly due to the glut of money at pre- sent in Hong Kong. Due to un- favourable exchange conditions Chinese bankers in Hong Koog can- not invest money abroad, and large sums are unemployed: hence the reduction of interest.

Interest on current accounts » in some foreign-style banka will be re- duced to 1 (one) per cent, from July 1
