THE WORLD'S FIRST PARLIAMENT.

TO-DAY'S CELEBRATIONS.

1000th ANNIVERSARY OF GREAT POLITICAL EXPERIMENT.

A thousand years ago, on the plains of Thingvellir, at a spot approximating the centre of Ice- land, the first parliament in his tory was born.

Celebrations marking the

en-

niversary of its 1.000th birthday will be held at this spot from June 26 to 2s. The whole popula tion of the island, some 100,000 people mostly farmers, and, about half as many visitors and tourists, will participate in the festivities.

The plains of Thingvellir, some thirty miles from the capital of Iceland. Reykjavik, are a mass of white tents for the accommodation of the visitors. There are only four hotels in Reykjavik, one just com- pleted for the celebrations, and it is expected that many of the visi- tors will live in the ships that bring them to the island.
