GOSSIP FROM THE SHARE MARKET.

HOW THE MARKET FARED PRIOR TO JUNE

SETTLEMENT,

FREE ADVICE FOR INVESTORS.

Gosip often moves the market, but no investor should either buy or sell on market quasip only.

HONG KONG ROPES changed hands at $9.25 to $9.40 during the week, and are still in request at $9.50.

77

DAIRY FARMS have buyers t 825.30 and sellers at 893.75.

The volume of business transact ed during the past week has been on a fairly small scale, in spite of the June Settlement, which falls

HONG KONG "AMUSEMENTS due to-day. As I surmised a good as easier, this being due perhaps many stocks have had to slide down, le

new competition, Although this being due to wholesale un-quoted at $23.30, sellers, I think,

will accept leas loading of shares by speculative peopic

Quite a large business was done in Trams, Providents and Hotela, at rates lower than in the previous week. The market improved slight- ly at the close on Saturday, but yesterday some more people cleared on of their speculative commit. ments, as I understand it has beca difficult to arrange for the "carry ing" of these shares,

3

It is a fallacy to suppose that, been une money is not tight in Hong Kong, one could wait till the last moment before arranging for shares to be carried. I under- stand that on Saturday over million dollars had to be paid out to three or four big speculators who had taken the opportunity afforded until recently of getting out of their holdings at fanes rates, and buyers of these shares had found it difficult to arrange for them to be carried: “

As far as good sound investments go, there is still a good demand for this class of stocks. Lands, Wharves, Ferries, and Electrics were all being inquired for last

west, quite apart from the require

meats of the Settlement.

I have neen asked more than. onee this week whether the present. is a good time to get into the share market. ja view of the 'slight depression. For the present. I de not advise anyone to buy, and if one must invest I think a delas of three or four weeks, until just before the July Settlement, might prove worth while.

By the way. I hear that the July Settlement is very much bigger than today's settlement, which ought to decide those who are maxious to come in at the ebb to wait a little longer.

HONG KONG BANKS, looked as they were coming down during the week, but came in for a fair

Jugairy at the close, Although

• small less changed bands at $1,490, the price touched $1,008 later, and I hear that as much as $1,510 was 3aid.

+

UNIONS were sold in small par- cels during the week, between

5447.50 and $450 being paid.

*

WHARVES are in request at 311, but there are no sellers at this price.

CHINA PROVIDENTS are offer ed at $5.43, but buyers are not anxious to pay this figure, and I expect the stock will go down slightly.

HONG KONG LANDS changed hands at $84.25 to $95, and are firm at the latter figure, there being buyers in evidence.

EWOS: The Shanghai market is a bit better, and there is again a amall inquity for Ewos. Locally the shares are wanted at Tia. 13.30.

ANSWERS. TO CORRESPON. DENTS,

HONG KONG DAILY PRESS, TUESDAY, JUNE 24, 1930.

SILVER MARKET,

BROKERS CONSIDER

"

OUTLOOK OBSCURE,

LONDON, June 19. Silver prices were further mark. fed down to-day by 1 to 18d. 3/16 for cush and 10d. for forward delivery.

The weekly circular of Messra. Mocatta & Goldsmid says:-.

"The market has fuctuated con- siderably. On Saturday (June 7) there were reports of fresh. men- aures to be taken by the Chinese Government to regulate the import of silver into that country.

"This resulted in a temporary recovery, but the effect appears to have been short-lived, and "the un- dertone continues weak.

India and China both bought and sold, heavily and America figured occasionally as buyers, but they sold on balance.

Although the outlook is obscure, we cannot see that any feature is likely to raise the price from the present level."
