MACKINTOSH OF MACKINTOSH.
FAMOUS CHIEFTAIN'S BIRTHDAY.
PRINCE CHARLIE'S "BLUE BONNET-AND THE INVENTOR OF WATERPROOFS.
A man, who bears what is per haps one of the most romantic.
sounding names in the world, celebrates the seventy-ninth an niversary of his birthday to-day.
He is The Mackintosh of Mackin tosh, chief of the Clan Charran, a confederation, of sixteen clans, in- cluding Mackintosh and MacPher son. It is one of the most ancient chieftainships, and is said to des- cend from Sheagh of Shaw, a son of Duncan Macduff, third Earl of Fife, who acquired the designation Mac-in-tosch-ich, or The Thane's
SOD.
Although his title is The Mackin- tosh of Mackintosh, one addresses him simply a3 "Mackintosh," and it is said that the only thing that makes him cross is to be addressed

"Mr. Mackintosh." His wife, however, is always addressed as Mra. Mackintosh," although some of the ghillies and servants esll her "Your Ladyship."
The Mackintosh-his other names are Alfred Donald-will spend to day at Moy Hall, bis ancient palace-like house, in the centre of about a quarter of a million acres of estate, including some of the finest grouse shooting moors in the He has entertained Kings world. and Princes during "the season," and King George was at one time a regular visitor, even as far back as 1953, when he was Prince of Wales.

Gone now are the days when the chieftain of the clan was all power- ful, with even the right to execute, but The Mackintosh still preserves many of the old customs. He still wears the kilt and the Mackintosh tartan of red and dark blue, and his own piper plays around the house in the morning and evening, and in the dining-room after dinner.
The Mackintosh, who is Lord Lieutenant and Convener of the county of Inverness-shire, in the 23th chief of the Clan Mackintosh, He was born June 24, 1851, and succeeded his brother to the title in 1978.
There was some doubt at the time as to whether he would succoed his brother, who, six months before biz. death, had married, and whose widow was expecting a child: The title was held in abeyance for over- five months before a daughter was born

Clan's Most Famous Member. There have been many famous members of the clan, bat perhaps the best known is Charles Mackin- tosh, who when nearly 60 years of age, in 1923, patented a waterproof fabric which has ever after borne his name. In fact, this type of material has become a standard word in moss dictionaries,
There are many stories of the clan, and the part it took in the wars between the English and the Scots, and many are those who died for the bopeless cause of Prince Charlie. It is even said that a Royal decree was issued - permit- ting anyone to kill any member of the clan, and burn and pillage his property
An Ancient Curse. There is also a legend that the chieftainship does not often paas from father to son. It is the old story of a curse.
In the days before the Highlands became British, a Mackintosh of Moy slaughtered a chief of the Grant clan, and his son-in-law. The distraught daughter and wife called to Heaven that:--
"Never the son of a Chief of Moy Might live to protect his
father's age,... "Or close in peace his dying eye "Or gather his gloomy heritage." Whether or not the curse is to be believed, it is a fact that the present Mackintosh succeeded his brother. In turn, his only son, Captain Angus Macdonald, who for 9 years with the County married the daughter of the Duke The present Prince of (Inverness-shire) Militia, which is of Devonshire, died in Washington, now the third battalion of the D.O., in 1918, from paeumonia Queen's Own Cameron Highlan-brought on by war wounds.
