SECRET PIT AT KOWLOON BAY.
THE WILY OPIUM AND ARMS SMUGGLER.
Ia bis report for 1920, which has just been published, the Superintendent of Imports and Exports has some very interesting remarks to make on the methods employed by the Chinese in the Colony in avoiding liquor and tobacco taxation, and the ingenuity shown by the wily opium and arms smuggler. We give below, some" interesting statements taken from the report.
ANNUAL REPORT OF SUPERINTENDENT OF IMPORTS
AND EXPORTS..
The net revenue collected was $1,740,330.49 ncluding licence fees. Chinese spirit showed a decrease of $123,400.97; this decrease occurred chiefly in the last half of the year. European liquor showed an increase of 818,097.04.

When- ever the contents of the pit were required the whole of the cover, turf and all was lifted up and replaced. Care had been taken to water the turf frequently so that there was a luxuriant covering of grass, over which the search party walked without suspecting until they received precise indications of the position of, the cache.

The transier of all distilleries to the adequate control of specially trained officers, and their systema tic regulation, has enabled some idea to be formed of the enormous extent of the evasion of liquor duty which prevailed prior to 1920, when distilleries in practice were left to pay such duty as they felt disposed to pay.
