did not know that the four women who hired her boat were prostitutes. She agreed to carry them for 40 bents, but as far as she was con cerned, the matter ended there.

In the witness-box, Sergt. Headridge, the officer for the pro- accution, stated that shortly after 3 on the night of June 15, he stop- ped defendant's boat in the Cen- tral Fairway. There were four well-dressed girls on board. In reply to a question put by him, they (the girls) said they were prostitutes, and were bound for a ship. They did not, however, give the name of the ship.

At this stage, the Magistrate asked if the interpreter was in court, and when he was informed that he (the interpreter) was not present, Comdr. Holo said that when he took the officer's evidence, he took it for granted that the interpreter was present. In the circumstances, he was afraid he could not take the latter part of witness' evidence, which is only hearsay evidence."

Sergt. Oliver then went into the box, where he corroborated Sergt. Hendridge's evidence.

In registering a conviction, the Magistrate said that he would do all he could to put a stop to that sort of thing. He would not have masters and mistresses of passenger boats carrying women about the harbour for immoral purposes.

A fine of 850, with the alterna- tive of six weeks' imprisonment, was imposed, and a similar sen tence was passed on the other three defendants, all of whom returned a plea of guilty.
