GOSSIP FROM THE SHARE MARKET.

REACTION SETS IN AFTER MILD "BOOM.".

FREE ADVICE FOR INVESTORS.

[Be“ KUFAN"]

Gosip often moves the market,; but no investor should either buy or sell "on market gossip only.

The reaction predicted, little while back has set in, this being dug in a large measure to profit- taking before the June Sectlement, which, from all accounts, is going to be a very heavy one.

The majority of people who are

interested in the share market are making money. When things wère Brisk there was a distinct greed for more in evidence, and "now, when things are "slowing down a bit, the Süme speculators are anxious to accept smaller profits rather than take any chance.

I have been making close id- quiries regarding likely, dithedties in the June Settlement, and am pleased to say that so far there is no indication of any possible hitch. There has been short-selling here and there, but nothing, to cause aların. It follows, therefore, that we should not see any unduly sharp rise in any particular stock. fact, I would go so far as to kay that stocks which have risen merely on the strength of rumours are likely to recede considerably, and even some of the steadier stocks on the list may be affected.

Ia

A good time to get into the mar hat would be close to the June. Settlement, but even then I would advise the purchase of regular' dividend-paying stocks. In the event of an all-round boom, these shares will appreciate as much as the more speculative kind, but with this difference that if the worse should happen, holders of good stocks will know just where they sland, as they will have something solid in hand.

HONG KONG BANES-Due to the continued drop in exchange, Banks improved further, and shares chauged hands at the close of busi- ness at 81,300 to $1,340. On Satur- day a fair number of shares were offering for sale at $1,540.

CHINA UNDERWRITERS "were dealt in at $2,60, and are easy" at this rate:

UNIONS are wanted at $478.

KOWLOON WHARVES appear to have been neglected altogether,, And the buying rate on Saturday, I understand, was not more than $171, with sellers at $173. There has been quite a good number of these shares sold for settlement at a much higher figure.

CHINA, PROVIDENTS dropped a little during the week, touching $3.50. On the strength of rumours, however, this stock improved to wards Saturday to a buying rate of 83.70/80.

PERTINENT QUERY ON

INDIAN BOYCOTT.

The following letter contributed to one of the foreign papers in India will doubtless be appreciated by harassed piece goods dealers locally:-

Sma,-Connected as I have been with the piece-goods trade for the last 13 years, I am interested both in swadeshi and foreign cloth. It is a pity that every time any poli-. tical movement is started, the cloth

Very large stocks of unsold cloth are still possessed by the merchants and any movement that binders their trade helps the country to T285 wards economic ruin. It is a mat- ter for considerable surprise that Dr. Kitchlew and some other Con- zress workers continue to enjoy the Gold Flake or the Honeydew smoke, while they ask others to give up the use of some very vital necessities. What worries me most is the ques- tion of huge losses to which many of my fellow merchants will be put without any corresponding gain to the Congress.

In the Amritsar market it is rumoured that some of the Moham "medan merchants are trying to capture the import tråde. This aspett of the problem is very serious. It is. a well-known fact that the Mohammedans, as a com- munity, have not identified them- selves with the campaign of direct action. They are using every pos sible opportunity to strengthen their political and economie pozi tion and if the rumours turn out to be true, they are sure to establish a firmer position in the commercial

life of the court of the Muslims Consumers are apparently main-making an advance in any sphere, taining their policy of buying from hand to mouth, and interest is con-. "fined to spot and afloat rubber.

but what I cannot understand is the game of those Congress leaders who want to stifle the prosperity of the Hindus and thereby benefit the Mohaminedans. They might placate one community at the sacrifice of the political interests of the other, but any interference in the matter of trade is hardly fair. This may not be palatable to the Congress leaders, but there is a good deat of truth in this and I wish the Hindu traders realized this menace. The sooner they do it the better.-- Yours, etc.,
