CHINESE PICTURES.

INTERESTING EXHIBITION.

The spring exhibition of pictarea (Chinese) y the students of the Lai Ching Art College. Wong Nei Cheong Road, Happy Valley, open- ed on Saturday, and will remain open for four days.

I have been privileged to view the pictures as they were being arranged, and in the hope of in teresting the public the excellent art work that is being done in the schools of the Colony, I describe a few of the more outstanding pic tures; a Lask very difficult where so many are of great merit. There are about 140 drawings on show, em- bracing the work of students of six month to Luree years' study.

Design and Execution.

A large number are in Chinese ink, a medium in which the Chinese excel, and are singularly gifted in the expression of colour values, the totes being so well rendered that the loss of the colour itself is not Eelt, particularly in the flower and bird studies.,

In design, too, some of the pic- tures are of great beauty: the branch of a tree, a spray of foliage, or a flowering shrub provides the simple material from which the evolve such charming, decorative Panels.

Decorative Effect.

#

It is, of course, from the purely decorative point of view and stan- dards that these pictures must be looked at and judged, and not from the literal and imitative viewpoint of Western ideas:

It might be of interest to note that the most progressive of modern Western artists, insist that the de corative value of a picture takes precedence over subject matter.

Visitors Welcomed: Students of Western art will find much of interest and value in these purely decorative pictures of Chi hese art, and it is hoped that many. will give encouragement by attend ing the show. The public is cor dially invited. European visitors will find several young people in attendance to escort them round the exhibition, and who will gladly give any information required. ;···· The exhibition is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.. and from 7 p.m. to
