CHINESE ESTATES IN HONG KONG.
WIDOW LEAVES OVER A MILLION DOLLARS.
Probate has been granted locally in respect of the estate of Tang Ho Shi, a widow, who died at Leighton Hill Road on October 27, 1927, at the age of 61.
Testator's estate in Hong Kong, which comprised mostly house pro- perty and mortgage securities; was assessed at a value of $1,366,000 Estate duty payable on this amount, at seven per cent, was 8104,155.

She did not know she was going
to die.
She thought that one of her lovers had bribed the officer of the firing squad to use blank cartridges,
Not only had the officer in charge of the ring squad been bribed to use blank cartridges," writes Major Thomas Coulson in his book, Mata Hari, Courtesan and Spy," "but the gendarmes respon sible for pinioning Mata Hari's arms were also bribed to fasten the cords so lightly that her body could sink to the ground when the shots were fired.",
But although the gendarmes tied her loosely to the tree, the offeur in charge of the firing party did not fula) his promise about the car- tridges, for the beautiful spy fell dead at the first volley..
Mata Hari betrayed to her Ger- man employers the plans of the Freuch offensive at Chemin des Dames, with the result that the French suffered terrible casualties.
She obtained most of her in- formation from young French öff, cers, who were infatuated with her. A member of the French Govern- ment gave evidence on her behalf

SPIRAL GLASS BRACELETS-RETURN OF JADE
-"SPOON" NECKLACES-BEADWORK
Those elevated and mysterious people who are responsible for the launching of the latest Parisian tushion wisely realise that there is Lever a period during the year ben the elegant woman does not seek for some fresh adornment.
The makers of both expensive and inexpensive jewellery seem to have been working overtime during the last few weeks to think of really new and original ideas.
jade bangles and carved pendants crowd the shop windows.
Instead, jade is treated as a pre- Cious stone and provided with elaborate mountings of diamonds or paste with a touch of onyx or black enamel to make the whole thing look really modern...
Some of these jade-centred brooches and pendants seen in the big jewellery shops in the Ras de la Paix are really marvels of mo dern design and workmanship.

FOREIGN BANK'S LOSS.
ALLEGED EMBEZZLEMENT FROM MERCANTILE BANK.
Following inquiries made by the hank officials, says the N.-C. Daily News, it transpired on May that there is every reason to be- lieve that funds in the possession of the Mercantile Bank of India to the extent of about. Tis. 150,000 have been embezzled..
It is stated that the second com itpradore of the bank, Mr. Chu Shiaoshing had occasion, through illness or other cause, to be absent from the bank for two days. On his return he is understod to have found that certain accounts 'were missing. This led to an investiga tiou, on his part, and in the course of the day the matter was placed in the hands of detectives of the Central Police Station.
The woman stated that "at 3 ́s.m. a strange woman entered her mat shed and asked for the loan of a kerosene tin to carry water. The demand being refused, the stran- ger proceeded to blow out the light and rendered the woman helpless before carrying away the baby. It was alleged that a rope was wound 1ound-her-neck and sand forced into her month. Another feature in this flavoured story was that her husband slept...in an adjoining matched, but that she was unable to call out for his 'assistance.
