'Phone by Light Beam. Half an hour before noon, and three days before new moon, Pro- fessor Stewart would discharge the wannon which would force the ship to leave the earth's surface at the rate of two miles a minute. Two and n-half hours later, firing from the lower cannon would be stopped. By this time the ship would have reached a height of 13,900 miles. Seventy hours later, crossing the moon's orbit. Professor Stewart would fire the forward, cannon, and ecast around the moon while the ship was slowly sucked towards the satellite.

The forward cannon would be fired to cushion" the fall to the moon, and once landed men in diving suits could explore its sur 'face. Telephonic communication. with the earth over a beam of light would be possible. Professor Stewart believes

The return trip would be faster, because of the earth's greater attrac tion, and landing in a desert would be pecessary because of the tremen- dous charges which the forward can non would fire to present crashing.

A trip to the moon and back with in the next century is visualised as a scientific possibility by Dr. John Stewart, Professor of Astrono- mical Physica at Princeton' Univer- city.

In a lecture delivered at New York recently he said that speed was the prime requisite for such a trip. He was confident that in the course of another hundred years, through the use of some such form of concentrated energy as ionised | hydrogen, which contains a hundred times the energy of coal and oxygen, a speed of some 50,000 miles an hour could be attained.

Within twenty years,” he said. it is very likely that a speed of 1,000 miles an hour will be possible., The journey to the Moon will be made in an airship propelled on the principle of the rocket and built for a voyage through interplanetary space in the form of a large metal sphere 110 feet to diameter and weighing 10,000 metric tons
