WIRELESS PLAYS ON "MAGIC ORGAN.”

THUNDER CONTROLLER. DIALOGUE BLENDED FROM

MANY STUDIOS,

..

In a little room at Savoy Hill, the headquarters of the B.B.C., a grave-facco man sits at an organ, As he touches a key here, and an- other there, the scund that fills the room changes in volume or tone. And all the while he is following the score closely. Completey con- centrated, he has not a thought for anything else but the task in hand.

But no ordinary organ is this. If you look a little closer you will find it consists of a well-laden

table with an upper structure run- ning from one end to the other. The musical score is typewritten manuscript. The keys are switches and dials. The music and the speech are coming from a loud speaker that is fixed to the wall

A telephone enables the grave- faced "player" of the instrument to talk to the beyond with lifting the transmitter. A row of tiny lights convey important signals.

A New Technique.

For what you have strayed. inte is the control room, and the "or ganist is Mr. Lance Sieveking, engaged in producing a wireless play.

Recently Exiles" which is a play that has been written round the Russian revolution was broad- cast, and one of the characters in it is Kerensky. In this play it is intended to exploit practically all the resources of the new technique evolved in this country for the pro- duction of radio drama...

It has nothing in common with the stage play; the result can be likened more correctly to that of a film drama with its fading effects and itsashbacks" and "close" ups."

The producer does not see any of the actors; he directs simply by sound.
