MODERN CLUBHOUSE FOR KOWLOON

CRICKET CLUB.

YESTERDAY'S EXTRAORDINARY MEETING.

SUBSCRIPTIONS RAISED ALL ROUND.

There was a very large gathering of members at the extra- orilinary general meeting of the Kowloon Cricket Club held last evening, when it was decided, amongst other things, to authorise the General Committee to proceed with a scheme, for the building of a new Club House of a permanent type overlooking the north- west corner of the cricket ground at a cost of not more than $30,000. Mr. R. E. Lindsell, president, was in the chair and sup. porting him were the following members of the Committee:-E. Abraham, E. R. Price, C. J. Roe, A. Hyde Lay, V. C. Labium, A. E. Silkstone, B. Petheram and J. P. Robinson (Hon. Secretary).

HOW TO RAISE $50,000.

The Hon. Secretary having read the notice calling the meeting, the chairtaan said:-

The estimated cost of the new THE ONE THOUSAND Club House, including furniture and fittings, is $60,000, and we have thereloro to raise a further $35,000 10 pay for it. Your Committee's recommendation is that this sum should be raised by an issue of 810 debentures bearing interest at f per cent, but it has been suggested to me that it might be better, instead of paying away the whole of our cash reserve, to attempt to raise as much na say $50,000 by means of such debentures, and only deplete our reserve to the extent of the balance required to make up $60,000. I am quite prépared to accept any Amendment to that effect that may be proposed.

M. E. Abraham proposed and Mr. Herridge seconded, as an amendment, that the sum should be raised to $50,000; namely, that the committee should first raise $35,000 with the option of calling for an- other $15,000 should they so desire.

Mr. W. Goldenburg proposed further amendment, that the sum should be raised to 860,000. Mr. E. S. Abraham seconded this but when put to the vote the original amendment was adopted.

Gentlemen,-As you all know a sword like that of Damocles has been hanging" over our head for some years, and we have been kept guessing all the time, as to whether trwas going to fail, and if so wheh. Ever since the Government develop ed the northern part of King's Park into terraced recreation grounds and definitely assigned 3 fots to us. we have been in two minds whether to go there or hang on here. Finally at the annual general meeting in 1998 we decided to move at the end of this year and to consider build ing a new Club House at the stop end of our new grounds. Since then the position has altered somewhat. 'The threatened re-building of the Gun Club Hill harrueks-a scheme which involved the conversion of these grounds into a Garrison Re- creation Ground-is still no more than a threat, and last year when in England I am an old friend in the Aruy who appeared to know anore of this very scheme than any- Ane etar and learned from him that there was very little likelihood of it going through in our life-time. And this brings me to ment, and if after spending $80,000 the first of the proposals before you on our new building we are requir tonight. The only reasonable alternative open to us in my opinion is to exercise our option on lots E., E. and E.3 originally developed for us across the way, and that will involve our moving by the end of the year, or of next year at the latest.

"Finally," "they" "painted out that a decision to build at the Club's own a definite risk must be taken as renunciation by the Club of it's option on plots E.1. E.2 and E. in King's Park,

is it might happen that after building we should et one time lose our Club House and grounds, and be left without any immediate prospect of finding a new home This is a grave double risk, but in our view it is worth taking that risk. To convert this Club into a limit- cd liability company will in no way alter its nature or even its name. We shall still remain the K.C.C. The only difference will be that our i Rules will become Articles of Asso- ciation and one of those Articles will limit the individual liability of each member of the Club, in the event of our going bankrupt, to $30. may add that our friends and neighbours, the Bowling Green" Club, have recently taken this: step and shouldered an individual liability of 950, and that the H.K.C.C. and U.SR.C. are other limited companies with similia liability.
