The Shanghai Champions is the cighth race on the card to-day. Wheatcroft is considered a likely candidate but although the animal has done well in the past, he will be extremely lucky if he should manage to win against Bright Lnd and Busy Bee. The Inst named was beaten by Wheatcroft on Monday over a slow 1 miles but bas re- deemed himself by his record- breaking performance yesterday. Bright Lad, however, looks to be the thing to follow. He apparently did not race yesterday nor did Wheatcroft Banquet. Eve account. ed for Alligator of "the mile on Monday but da the latter had quali fied for the Champions in March, both are likely to face the starter in to-day's big race.

WATER POLO LEAGUE.
THE JUNIOR / DERBY.
GREAT INTEREST IN. TO-DAY'S RACE.
(CNITED PRESS. Į
LONDON, May 6. Being the first classic race of the senson, and on ace at of its im portant bearing on the Derby, millions are eagerly awaiting the result of the Two Thousand Guineas
таке.
"Old racegoers call it the Junior Derby," a sort of try-out for the big event at Epsom on June Many good judges of horses, and those who are very shrewd at the betting game, frequently pick the Deyby winner from to-morrow's fold. They note especially the co- dition of the horses in the paddock, besides, of course, any incidents in running likely to bear on the Derby itself.
22
There is however a good deal of difference between the two races. Even should the identical field run at Epson, the placings might be easily reversed, owing to the differ eat nature of the two tracks, and the distance in the Derby being four furlongs longer. A good sprin- ter which can just stay out a mile, and allowing for good racing trim, could win to-morrow's event, but it takes a stayer and what the jockeys eall a handy" animal to win at Epsom

Tall Stories. Tips for the race are numerous, there is no colt of outstanding class in the rnce. It is one of the features of the 1930 classic races for that last year produced no animal of exceptional merit, at least sa far as those which ran in public were concerned.

Tall stories were "floating during the spring

Experience has shown that these yards have to be taken with the proverbial grain of salt They usually emanate from small stables, or bookmakers who are anxious to commence operations on the big events early in the year, hoping that the public will swallow the bait, which it must be admitted has swelled their coffers very successful- ly in recent years.
For weeks past the Guineas has been the leading topic of conver- sation at Newmarket, the biggest training centre in England, and also the headquarters of the Jockey Club. Every little movement of the likely runners has been watched and noted by the touts, who have some mysterious system of report- ing gallops and trials. They have been shown to "tap" stable-hands for the latest information, when the latter (and there are thousands
