“YOUR VERY GOOD HEALTH"
SMILE--and the WORLD SMILES WITH YOU
The importance, for the preservation of general health of giving adequate time and attention to the care of teeth and gums
Dentists, as-many-an-attractive-woman-has-discovered, are the most difficult men to get an appointment with. In these days when fortunes are being made out of tooth pastes and mouth washes. it is rare to see a mouth that has not at least the semblance of, containing a well-cared-for set of teeth. But, unfortunately, the attention given to teeth is often superficial and does not take u sufficiently important place in the daily toilet. In the course of a week the time spent on the care of the, teeth and mouth by- giene can be reckoned in minutes as against the hours spent on, say, hair-dressing, face. massage and manicure.
A lugubrious proverb merchant has suggested that we dig our graves with our teeth, the inference 'being that we eat too much: in these days of diet fads the original sense of the adage is super- annuated, but the funereal impliestions still apply because a large number of the more prevalent modern ailments can be traced to a toxic condition of gums and teeth. Intestinal troubles, in- luding the ubiquitous colitis, which may infect the appendix and lead to the operating theatre, rheumatism and gout, anemia, septic pneumonia, tonsilitis and other serions and intimidating ill- nesscs, may have their origin in an unhealthy condition of the teeth and gums.
Apart from the three-monthly inspection of the mouth by an efficient and honest dentist, much may be done to avert disaster by personal knowledge and care.
I am not going to discuss pyorrhen. Once this condition is established it is a matter for medical as well as dental diagnosis and treatment, but patients should be wary of having all their teeth taken out until they have had the benefit of thorough X-ray examination, more than one opinion, and at least an attempt at a curu by less drastic methods.
It is not enough to have cleat teeth: the gums must be kept healthy and the whole mouth in an antiseptic condition.
To begin with, a really good tooth paste should be chosen, preferably according to the advice of a dentist who knows the character of your teeth and gums. A clean toothbrush in good condition must be used. A mouth is quite a long enough life for a tooth brush, and it should always be rinsed in an antiseptic wish after use. I have often been horrified by the condition of tooth brushes used by people who are soigné and extravagant in other respects.

The teeth should be brushed up and down instead of across, and every facet, inside and across the top, must be dealt with. When the teeth are close together it is advisable to pass a dental floss between them after cleaning, as brush cannot reach this part of the tooth. The brushing should be followed by wash with an antiseptic lotion this can be done with a soft brush: dipped: in the solution and the remains used as a gargle.
It is an excellent practice to massage the gums with the finger-tips, upwards towards the teeth, with milk of magnesia.or a reliable antisoptic at night and leave the residue around the teeth. Incidentally, keeping the bocal cavity thoroughly antisep tio is one way of avoiding falling a victim to the germs of in fluenza and common cold.
Children should be strictly trained and supervised in the enre of their teeth and mouth; if they are, mach subsequent ill-health
avoided. ***
It is not only appearance but the preservation of general bealth, which makes it essential to give adequate time and atten tion to the teeth and gums.?
A diet appropriate to one's constitution and physical tenden- cies and proper attention to internal economy are obviously of importance as well, because dyspepsia and the generation of acids is inimical to the health of teeth and gums
