HONG KONG AUTOMOBILE ASSOCIATION

ASKS FOR MORE MEMBERS.

WORK ACCOMPLISHED DURING YEAR REVIEWED

IN DETAIL AT ANNUAL MEETING.

MOTORISTS INTERESTS SAFEGUARDED,

The Hong Kong Automobile Association held its annual meet- ing at 5.30 p.m. yesterday at the Board Room of Messrs. Jardine, Matheson & Co., Ltd. ..

The Chairman, Mr. Ho Leung, in his speech remarked that the Association had had a satisfactory, year," both in regard to finance and increase in membership A proposal had been re ceived from the Automobile Club of British Columbia offering facilities of service to the Association's members at

any time travelling in British Columbia, and in return asking that their members be accorded the Association's privileges whenever they should be present in Hong Kong.

Mr. P. M. Hodgson," who was elected President for the current year, thanked the gathering on his new appointment and said that he would also like to thank the Committee on behalf of the mem- bers for the hard work they had put in during the past year, Mr. Hodgson said that if members only knew the time and trouble that had been spent, by the Committee in looking after their in- terests and those of motorists in general, they might have appre- ciated it more; and those who were not members already might join the Association. Continuing, he said that there must be very nearly two thousand private motor car owners in the Colony and suggested that every one of them should become a member of the Association. There could be no reason for not being one on account of expenses." Much of the sum, said Mr. Hodgson, was recoverable from their insurance, as insurance companies gavo. members rebate on their premium, which, in some cases, covered subscriptions paid to the Association. The speaker concluded by" saying that he would do. his utmost to induce as many motorista na possible to become members before the next annual meeting.

TWO TAIPANS DECLARE VIEWS TO COMMITTEE.

ANNUAL MEETING, HELD

YESTERDAY,

APPEAL MADE FOR MORE ·

··MEMBERS..

At the annual general meeting of the Hong Kong Branch of the Navy

A meeting of the Currency Com-League held yesterday, an appeal was made for prompt payment of subscriptions. At the close of the meeting, the Chairman also asked members to assist by making a drive for new members.

It was decided at the meeting that a wreath should be deposited

at Trafalgar Square on Nelson Day as a tribute from the Hong Kong Branch of the League.

The staggering burden of taxation. in the Mother Country undoubtedly accounts for the apathy of the "man in the street towards, the proposals to further reduce our naval strength,, but no benefit to the taxpayer is yet apparent.

The Navy League, let the make Lit clear, is a non-political and non-. party organization and should re- ceive the support, of all Britons Overseas..

We in Hong Kong are a relatively small and "isolated community, de- pendent largely upon the Navy for the security of our large sen-borne- and river-borne trade. If we cast our bread upon the waters by sub- scribing to the Navy League, wo can feel assured that the money will be used in protecting our cen interests.

Sopoy Disaster Fund.

The League devotes part of its funds to and also raises large suras for. the relief and support of the widows and orphans of naval men, and also in the training of ea cadets. These causes make their own appeal.

Your Committee have to thank members of the Committee, Mr. W. the whole community for their most A. Dowley (Hoa. Treasurer), and generous support to the fund now open for the benefit of the depend-" Mr. M. G. Marriott (Hon. Secre-ents of the gallant officer and men

The in-tary). terests of sterling-paid employees must be subsidiary to trade. The unsatisfactory feature of the pres Bent currency was the premium, and the remedy for this might be to diminish deposits in the Colony by reducing the rate of interest. Though the premium might not affect the rate of wages paid locally, it was harmful na being against the interests of firms with head offices in Hong Kong to which remittances were made from Shanghai. Mr. Paterson said that he thought the premium assisted in regard to im- ports for local consumption and adversely affected exports, of which, however, at present there were few. The premium might affect transit cargo insofar as it raised handling charges. He could assign no cause for the premium.

THE CHAIRMAN'S SPEECH. The Chairman addressed the meeting as follows:-

The printed report and accounts of the Hong Kong Branch of the Navy League for the year 1920 are now in your hands and you will see that the balance of cash in hand is $1,141.07, as against 81,220.18 at the end of the previous year.

Our membership is about 200, but only 74 subscriptions were paid last year and your Committes appeals to members to send in subscriptions promptly on receipt of the hon. treasurer's application.

The fund will close in a few days. and it is hoped that further sub- seriptions will cuable the sum of £1,000 to be remitted to Londen,

The intention is to have the money distributed without delay,

our Vice-President.

Rear- and Admiral Hill, will advise and assist your Committee in this matter.

We are. "indebted to: Mr. Hicks of the Hong Kong Telegraph" and to the other newspapers for the publicity and support which they have given to cur appeal.

In closing, Mr. Shields proposed the adoption of the report and accounts, which was carried, Capt. T. Laurenson, D.S.C., seconding. ELECTION OF OFFICERS. A proposal by Mr. Dowley that Mr. A. L Shields be elected Pre- sident for the ensuing year was seconded by Mr Champkin and unanimously carried.

The Chairman's speech was -DS follow :-

Gentlemen. It is the duty and, might I say, also the privilege of the President of the Automobile Association to address membery of the Association at least once a year on the occasion of their annual meeting. I am happy that, on the present occasion, I can face you in the presence of an improved financial condition of the Associa tion. Whereas on the 1st January, 1929, the Association had to its credit in fixed deposit and current account only $12,883.94, we closed the rear with a balance at credit amounting to $14,724.03.
