CURT RETORT TO "QUEEN VICTORIA.

A QUEER PARTY,

Nearly forty years ago a little boy in the North of England told his father how eager he was to be an engineer.

"The Queen said, 'John, I've forgotten my shawl, and he before fetching it countered with, 'Aye, you'll be forgetting your head

next.'"

"The remark was graciously ac erpted," Sir Nigel says in his book of recollections, "Hammersmith Hoy, published last month, in the spirit in which it was offered." A no less characteristic story is told of W. E. Gilbert, He was found by a friend standing outside a post office. Inside Mrs. Gilbert could be seen atamping her letters. Gilbert explaited "that he was waiting there while his wife tasted' the stamps to see if they fresh.

He is now 43 years of age, with great business achievements behind him already, but he never forgets the early days of his ambition to be an engineer.

His father, Mr. Henry Gardner, stated that his san hated publicity, and the romance of his business career could not be related.

In bis father's absence he had gone to the playground, where the playground inspector noticed him and brought him to "the station.
