Chairman's Speech,- Addressing the gathering, the Chairman said:Gentiemen, Af an extraordinary general meeting of the Company held on February 28, 1030, it is stated from the chair that your Board would review the whole question of compensation to your late General Managers and place this matter before share holders again in general meeting.

"Negotiations with Messrs. Sho wan, Tomes & Co. were commenced after many discussions and much at the beginning of March, and

careful though, your Board, bearing io view Messrs. Shewan, Tomes a Co.'s long association with this Company, now recommend the pay-

ent to them of a sum of $125,000 payable over a period of five years by five instalments of 825,000 per annum, each such instalment to be paid by four quarterly payments of $6,250 in each year. Should such recommendation meet your AP proval, I would mention that Messrs. Shewan, Tomes & Co. have agreed to accept this sun and the method of payment and have alau agreed not to assume competitive agencies in relation to the market ing of cement covering the period of five years over which such com- pensation would be paid. As you are all well acquainted with the services rendered by Messrs. She- wan, Tomes & Co., I will not now

KOWLOON CITY MURDER TRIAL.

COURT HELD UP OWING TO A MISUNDERSTANDING.

:

سین

A misunderstândling which occur. red at the Victoria Gaol kept judge. and counsel waiting for over half an hour at the Supreme Court yesterday. The Kowloon City mur der case was adjourned froin. the previous day, but the three prison

ers were not in Court at the time

sed for the sitting. It was after a telephone message had been sent to Mr J. W, Fraaks, Prison Super-. intendent, that he hurried into Court with the prisoners to explain a misunderstanding which occurred in his department.

The Chief Justice (Sir Joseph Kemp) entered the Court at ten minutes past cleven and asked: - Is the officer here who is in charge of the prisoners ).

A Warder:-Yes, my Lord."

Did you know. that the Sessions were adjourned until half past ten this morning -Yes, my Lord.

Did you convey that information to the authorities at the gaol (— Ies, my Lord.

His Lordship:-Why, then, were the the prisoners not here at half past

Mr. Franks explained that it was due to a misunderstanding at the prison. On Tuesday afternoon he was rung up by Mr. D.. L. Surellett, who asked him to be good enough to inform Mr. Brutton, who was then interviewing oge of the prisoners, that the case was ad- journed until May 5. Mr. Franks added that he, sent the message to the Offeer in Charge of Prisons and apparently that officer assumed the case would not be heard until May 5. It was apparently taken that the case was adjourned so far as the prisoners were concerned.

His Lordship-You realise that that is not sufficient authority and no doubt you will take steps to prevent an occurrence of this kind happening again.

Mr. Franks-Yes, my Lord.

Mr. F. C. Jenkin, who is assign- ed to defend the prisoners, said that he had gravely under-esti mated the time he required in order to prepare his defence. Counsel's application for a further adjourna ment was granted by bis Lordship, who fixed May 5 as the date of the trial.
